The Cubs hope saving about $2.5 million after trading David DeJesus to the Nationals is only part of their latest look toward the future. For starters the dealing of DeJesus for a player to be named will give other players a chance to prove they can help revamp a stagnant offense. "The biggest thing is figuring things out offensively" general manager Jed Hoyer said Monday before Nate Schierholtz drove in a career-high six runs with two home runs and a double to support Jeff Samardzija in an 11-1 victory over the Nationals. "We do some things very well" Hoyer continued. "Our slugging percentage has been pretty good this year but we've got to get to the bottom of the runners-in-scoring-position issue. We haven't been the worst batting average team in baseball in the National League in two years but we've been the worst in scoring position and the fact those things don't line up is frustrating. "We have to get better at that. We have to get on base more period. That's an issue we have and I think there's a team offensive element that I don't think we're all that good at. We're last in the league in sacrifice bunts and last in sacrifice flies. We have to get better at all those elements. "We'll take a pretty good look at our offense this offseason for sure and going forward. We have a lot of young offensive talent coming. But we can't just rely on the young guys. We have to figure out how we can be a more efficient offensive team." Without DeJesus the Cubs hope their outburst was the start of a turnaround. Schierholtz hit a three-run homer in the first and added a two-run shot in the seventh. Donnie Murphy hit two home runs and Dioner Navarro hit his 11th homer — a three-run shot — in the fifth. "There were a couple of weeks of anxiety with all the rumors and you try not to think about it" Schierholtz said of the trade speculation. "I'd like to be part of the future here and I'm happy I'm not out of here although it's upsetting to see Dave go. He's a pretty good teammate and I was with him for only for half a season. He's one of my favorites."
