PLAYERS: Scott Hairston
TEAMS: Chicago Cubs
The Cubs have traded Scott Hairston to the Nationals for a class A pitcher. Hairston was signed this past offseason for 2-years and $5 million after his solid 2012 season. In 112 plate appearances with the Cubs, Hairston hit only .172/.232/.434. His wOBA was .283 and he had a wRC+ of 73. He had -0.6 fWAR and -0.5 rWAR. Hairston had never been a good hitter vs right handers, but had always hit lefties quite well. All 8 of his home runs this year came against lefties, but his average and OBP were so poor that he still had a wRC+ just above 90. He’ll play in the same role for the Nationals. Hairston was owed another $2.5 million next year and the Cubs will chip in about $500,000 while the Nationals pay the rest of the salary. It’s not known at this time who the pitcher is that the Cubs got. I will update the post, or create a new one, with that information when it’s available. The post Cubs trade Scott Hairston to Nationals appeared first on Obstructed View.

The Washington Nationals added a right-handed hitter to their bench on Sunday night, acquiring outfielder Scott Hairston from the Chicago Cubs for a minor-league pitcher, according to major league sources. The Nationals Add Scott Hairston, Nifty Role Player

When a player hitting .172 with a .232 on base percentage is traded for an A-ball pitching prospect, it usually doesn’t generate big headlines. So, you can be forgiven if you haven’t paid a ton of attention to the most recent trade between the Nationals and Cubs, which sent outfielder Scott Hairston to Washington and Ivan Pineyro to the Cubs, plus a pair of PTBNLs, with one...

Matt Garza: Cubs extension talks likely a ploy

Tuesday brought some interesting news on the Matt Garza trade front, and it wasn't something that most of us had expected. With the last two starts that Garza has made being believed to be his last with the Chicago Cubs, most of us were surprised to hear that the Cubs were actually talking about an extension with the right hander. After starting the season on the disabled...

Cubs trading Garza or not?

There seems to be some confusion out of Chicago as Jon Heyman of CBS Sports is reporting that the Chicago Cubs are considering keeping Matt Garza. Just yesterday we mentioned how the Washington Nationals were showing interest in Garza, like many other teams. This is pretty hard to believe after six months of non-stop talk of the Cubbies trading Garza at the deadline. In what could...

The pre-All Star Game Cubs rundown

There are way too many storylines to go through this time of year.  Between the promotion and successes of various Cubs prospects in the minor leagues, the impending trades of certain Cubs assets such as Matt Garza, the international free agent signing period and the still-unsigned Cubs draft picks including Kris Bryant (we’ll know by 4 PM Central on Friday), we have a hefty slate...

Garza (5-1), meanwhile, came through...

During the summer, we all miss college sports — to satisfy your fix, you generally have to turn to professional athletics. But fans of the Chicago Cubs got the best of both worlds yesterday. Pinch hitter Dioner Navarro had a game-ending sacrifice fly in the 11th inning, lifting the Chicago Cubs to a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. Anthony Rizzo sparked the winning rally with a leadoff single. He advanced on Alfonso Soriano's single and went to third when Pirates catcher Russell Martin threw the ball into center field while trying to pick Rizzo...

Independent League pitching can hang with the big boys

It's difficult to compare one league to another when talent is distributed all over the world at different levels. How can you determine which minor league has the best pitching or the best hitting? Unless you scout every single one and know the minute details of every player, than you might have a chance. According to Baseball Reference, there are 31 different professional...
