The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Chris Volstad from Triple-A Iowa.  To make room for Volstad on the roster, Casey Coleman has been optioned to Triple-A. Sorry for the bad news Cubs fans. An just when you had won four in a row…Volstad will make the start for the Cubs tonight against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field. A member of Chicago’s starting rotation to start the season, Volstad went 0-6 with a 7.46 ERA (34 ER/41.0 IP) in eight starts with the Cubs before being optioned to Iowa on May 18. Great numbers, yes we know. With Iowa he wasn’t all that much better when you consider a major drop in competitive level, Volstad went 2-3 with a 4.44 ERA (25 ER/50.2 IP) in eight starts.  He takes a 19-start winless streak into this evening’s outing and aims for his first win since July 10, 2011 vs. Houston with the Marlins. Hanley Ramirez hit an RBI single off reliever Manny Parra in the 10th inning, and the Miami Marlins went on to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-6 Wednesday. Dugout Digest - bullpen meltdown

I remember two offseasons ago, the Miami (then Florida) Marlins going on a crusade to improve their bullpen. They brought in guys like Ryan Webb, Edward Mujica, and Mike Dunn in trades, and were attempting to heavily retool things. And last year, it worked. The Marlins pen had a 3.44 ERA, a top ten mark in the league, and a half run improvement over 2010. But this season...
