CINCINNATI (AP) -- The Reds have dropped injured ace Johnny Cueto from their division series roster, replacing him with right-hander Mike Leake for Game 4 against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.
Major League Baseball granted permission for the move at 11:30 a.m., less than five hours before the first pitch.
Cueto pulled muscles in his side during the first inning of the series opener Saturday night. The Reds had been hoping he'd improve enough to be able to pitch again. The Reds lead the best-of-five series 2-1.
The move Wednesday means the 19-game winner won't be allowed to pitch in the NL championship series if the Reds get that far. General manager Walt Jocketty says Cueto probably would have been limited to one start anyway.

Reds Pitcher Mike Leake Should Have Just Handed The Keys To Cincinnati To The Giants He Left The Door Open

The Cincinnati Reds could be the best team in all of baseball, that was until this week. The Reds should have been able to clinch the series against the San Fransisco Giants in last nights game. They didn’t and tonight they put a guy on the mound that may have had no business being there. Mike Leake did a horrible job for the Reds tonight, he left the door open for the Giants to...

Johnny Cueto won't start game four for the Reds

Reds starting pitcher Johnny Cueto, who left Saturday's NL Division Series opener with the Giants after just eight pitches, won't be starting game four on Wednesday. Cueto's injury that caused him to leave Saturday's game, initially diagnosed as back spasms, is now described as a mild right oblique strain. Cincinnati now has an interesting decision to make regarding...

Oblique strain leaves Cueto's status uncertain

Johnny Cueto's postseason might be over after six pitches. Cueto, the Cincinnati Reds' ace right-hander, is dealing with a mild right oblique strain, team trainer Paul Lessard said Tuesday. It's uncertain when or if Cueto will be able to pitch again in the postseason. When Cueto left his start Saturday in the first inning of Game 1 of the National League Division...

Gut Check for Johnny Cueto

News concerning Cincinnati Reds ace Johnny Cueto went from bad to worse on Tuesday.According to a report from C. Trent Rosecrans of CBS Sports, Cueto suffered a mild oblique strain on Saturday night in game one of the National League Division Series. The injury occurred in the first inning after Cueto had only tossed eight pitches. The original report was that back spasms were the...

Reds still undecided on Cueto if there's Game 4

Johnny Cueto's bad back left the Cincinnati Reds unsure who would start Game 4 if their playoff against the San Francisco Giants goes that far. The Reds' 19-game winner had to leave the first inning of the divisional series opener Saturday because of back spasms. Mat Latos and the bullpen took over and pulled off a 5-2 win. The Reds took the first two games in San Francisco...

Reds' Leake to start Game 4

The Cincinnati Reds have opted to start Mike Leake in Game 4 of the NLDS in place of an injured Johnny Cueto, according to ESPN's Bob Holtzman. Leake was selected over Mat Latos, because Latos had pitched four innings of relief in Game 1. Cueto left that start with after just eight pitches with what has been described as a mild right oblique strain. Because the team will...

Giants odds at 28 percent: Updated NLDS Odds

After an improbable win where the Giants offense took a play right out of the 2010 Padres playbook the Giants season continues to today. Since I last looked at the odds things have changed quite a bit, with Johnny Cueto out and Mike Leake brought into replace him. Today it is Leake vs. Barry Zito (another change) and if necessary it will be Mat Latos vs. Matt Cain tomorrow morning...

Mike Leake will start game four for the Reds

After my opining late last night about whether the Reds should start Mike Leake or Mat Latos in Wednesday's NL Division Series game four, the decision has bubbled up early this morning: Dusty Baker is going with Leake, meaning that Johnny Cueto will be out until the World Series (if the Reds advance that far).

Reds replace Cueto on playoff roster

The Reds dropped injured ace Johnny Cueto from their divisionseries roster Wednesday, replacing him with right-hander Mike Leakea few hours before Game 4 against the San Francisco Giants.

RLW Episode 28 – Two Down Nine More to Go

How many of you saw the Reds heading out west to start the 2012 Postseason and thought they’d win two games at AT&T Park? I know I didn’t. Especially with the way the offense was performing over the last 3 weeks of the season. Then Johnny Cueto lasts all of 8 pitches in Game 1. Yeah, 8! Still the Reds find themselves with a commanding lead as they head home Tuesday for Game...

Win or Go Home

My how quickly things can change. Instead of closing out a sweep at home against the Giants the Reds are now looking to avoid elimination themselves in a decisive Game Five. Mike Leake was activated to replace injured Johnny Cueto and he was lifted in the fifth inning after allowing five runs in the 8-3 Giants' Game Four win.

Reds Drop Game 3

The Reds came home riding high on the verge of a sweep over the Giants in the NLDS. The injury to Johnny Cueto added importance to that for the opportunity to rest their rotation. Unfortunately it was not to be. Homer Bailey turned in a solid start but the opportunistic Giants took advantage of some lapses on defense to win 2-1 in ten innings and stave off elimination.

Cardinals rally after short start

Last GameThe Reds had yesterday off to make the trip home, but there was still a game of some interest to the Reds happening. The Cardinals hosted the Nationals for game two of their series. The Cardinals do not have the home-field advantage and had squandered their first chance in front of the “best fans in baseball” so it was particularly urgent to them to get the second game...

Giants 8, Reds 3

Cincinnati's ace is out of action. His replacement let the Reds down on Wednesday. Now, they are turning to Mat Latos - their biggest offseason addition - to avoid an unprecedented playoff meltdown. The Reds saw the 2-0 lead they built in San Francisco evaporate as the Giants pounced on emergency starter Mike Leake for five runs in four-plus innings on the way to an 8-3 win...
