CINCINNATI (AP) -- Johnny Cueto remained masterful under the sun and Todd Frazier hit the go-ahead drive for the second straight game, leading the Cincinnati Reds over the Chicago Cubs 5-3 Saturday in the opener of a day-night doubleheader. Xavier Paul and Miguel Cairo added their first home runs of the season as the Reds roughed up another Chicago starting pitcher for three home runs. They hit three off Travis Wood in a 7-3 win on Friday night and three more off Jeff Samardzija. Cueto improved to 11-0 in 13 day-game starts this season. He settled down after allowing Alfonso Soriano's two-run homer in the first. Cueto (16-6) gave up three hits and struck out eight in eight innings, earning a standing ovation when he walked off the mound for the last time. He also hit David DeJesus, the first batter of the game. Cueto, who didn't allow a runner past first base after the first inning and retired 19 of the last 20 batters he faced, is the first Cincinnati pitcher since Dann...

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto has masterful season

The season is coming to an end. We only have a month and a half remaining until the playoffs begin and we will crown a new champion. Another highlight of this period is the customary handing out of awards. Soon names will be added to lists that include Nolan Ryan, Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays. One of the most prestigious of these awards is the Cy Young. Named for the (year) hall of...

Latos, Cueto give the Reds the ol' 1-2 punch

CINCINNATI -- While Johnny Cueto (16-6) is the Cincinnati Reds' pitcher most cussed and discussed by frustrated opposing hitters, Mat Latos hasn't been laying in the weeds pulling legs off crickets. The 24-year-old righthander is covered with body art and he says, "I only have one tattoo. It just isn't finished yet." They should tattoo a big red 'W'...

Game 118: Mets 8, Reds 4

There’s almost no part of the game last night that doesn’t qualify as an all-out stinker as the Reds broke their 5-game win streak in the final game of the series against the Mets. Homer Bailey’s performance certainly qualifies. In just 5.2 innings, he allowed 6 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits and 3 walks. I was on the road last night so I didn’t see the game on t.v., but I did...

Baker talks about Hanigan in the 8 hole

Last Game The Reds dropped an ugly game to the Mets last night to end the latest winning streak. Homer Bailey did not have a good outing, just as he hasn’t over his last four outings. If the pitcher introduced in the double-header tomorrow makes a good start, maybe Bailey will be getting a little more rest. It’s hard to imagine how he’d contribute to a postseason team in this...

Reds get another crack at Travis Wood

Last week against the Chicago Cubs, the Cincinnati Reds couldn't get much going against former teammate Travis Wood, who admitted having some extra motivation in facing his old club for the first time. Cincinnati could be in for more of the same when Wood returns to Great American Ball Park in the opener of a four-game series Friday night. The NL Central-leading Reds (71-47)...
