Marte homers again in extra innings loss

Final: Phillies 5, Pirates 4 (10 innings) WP: Michael Schwimmer LP: Michael Dubee Didn’t get to watch this one, but it is available on MLB.tv in the archives if any subscribers are interested in checking it out. Starling Marte homered in his first AB for his 2nd long ball of the spring. It also extended his hit streak to 8 straight AB. He did, however actually record an out later...

Trade With Juuust a bit outside: My First Andrew McCutchen Autograph.

I completed my first trade with Kyle of Juuust a bit outside. Kyle was in need of some Trifecta assistance, and posted some bait. A certain young centerfielder's autograph appealed to me, and we had ourselves a trade. My first signature of the Pirates' stud centerfielder, who was just rewarded for his stellar play and significant upside with a long-term deal. McCutchen'...

Starling Marte is on fire (and the long term implications)

The biggest buzz out of Bradenton through the first week of spring training games is that Starling Marte, who's generally been ranked somewhere in the 50-100 portion of people's Top 100 prospects lists, is absolutely on fire. He's played in five games, he's 8-for-11 and he's got a double and a homer, he stole a base, and he hasn't struck out yet (update as...

Erik Bedard look good today (and other stray observations

This is a little late, but here are my observations from this afternoon's Pirates/Twins broadcast: As everyone's already said, Erik Bedard looked quite good. He seemed to be locating the ball well and he was changing speeds nicely. The stat line was great, but that's not really all that important early in the spring.  Casey McGehee absolutely pounded a couple of...

Presley and Bucs outfield back to the future

With Andrew McCutchen's six-year, $51.5 million extension out of the way, it was signed March 6, the Pirates can reasonably take a look far down the road at what looks like the franchise's most dynamic outfield since Barry Bonds, Andy Van Slyke and Bobby Bonilla.

2012 Position Previews - Shortstop

The shortstop position has a new look in 2012 thanks to the departure of Ronny Cedeno. The Pirates brought in Clint Barmes to fill the starting role, and they have a couple guys in camp competing for the back-up job. Those guys are Yamaico Navarro and Josh Harrison. I'm going to talk about Navarro in this post, because I think he's going to the guy to be there in April. However...

Starling Marte will get here when he gets here

The Pirates’ Grapefruit League schedule isn’t even a week old yet but yinzers are already sp geeked up about what Starling Marte has been doing that they think the Buccos should keep him in the Big Leagues to start the regular season. Starling is the Pirates’ top fielding prospect, and third overall behind pitchers Jameson Taillon and Gerrit Cole, and he’s been playing...

Pirates 7, Red Sox 4

Andrew McCutchen had two RBI doubles and also singled in three at-bats to help the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Boston Red Sox 7-4 in exhibition play Friday night. McCutchen just missed two homers, doubling off the Green Monster replica in the third and fifth innings. Right-hander Clay Buchholz started for the Red Sox. He went three innings, allowing two runs on three hits, with...

The Bucs fell to the Phillies in the 10th inning today, 5-4. At the plate: Starling Marte homered again, giving him 8 hits in as many at bats. The impressive streak ended next time up when he flew out to right. Rod Barajas had two hits, including a double. On the mound: James McDonald allowed a run on two hits in three innings of work. Justin Wilson walked three and couldnâ€...

Casey McGehee’s big day not enough to beat Twins

Pirates Fall to Phillies on Walk-Off Home Run

Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Michael Dubee was going to be a long shot to make the roster, but the outcome today did not help his slim hopes. Dubee came on to pitch the tenth inning, which was most likely going to be the last inning no matter what. Luis Montanez was the first batter scheduled to face Dubee, and was also the last. Montanez hit a walk-off home run off of Dubee to propel...

Spring Training: The Phils even their grapefruit league record with a walk-off home run in extra-innings, as they defeat the Pirates, 4-3.

A lead-off, walk-off home run in the bottom of tenth leads the Phils to a 4-3 victory over the Pirates, as they even their grapefruit league record to 3-3. The Phils took the lead in the second as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Ty Wigginton hits an RBI double, knocking in Hunter Pence, who had just singled, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils increased their lead in the...
