Fox Sports Arizona:
PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks placed shortstop Didi Gregorius on the seven-day disabled list Sunday as he continues to recuperate from a Friday night beaning. Left fielder Jason Kubel was activated from the disabled list to fill the roster.
Gregorius had not been medically cleared to play as of Sundays game, which was the deadline for the D-backs to use the seven-day list retroactively. Gregorius will be eligible to return Saturday.
Kubel hit third against the Rockies in his first game back from a strained right quadriceps suffered the first weekend of the season and immediately made his presence felt, throwing out a runner at the plate in the top of the first inning.
Gregorius, who was was struck in the right temple by a Josh Outman pitch Friday, has passed an initial impact test, manager Kirk Gibson said, the first stage of a return protocol for players who have suffered concussion-like symptoms.
The next step is taking a 20-question test designed to assess cognitive response, and Gregorius has not gotten through that in the last two days. When he passes that test, he will be put under exerciselight duress and given the impact test again. Only then can he be cleared to play. Mark Reynolds needed four days to recover when he was hit in the head by a pitch in 2010.
The Giants will be the early beneficiaries of Gregorius absence. Gregorius was 4 for 14 with three doubles when the D-backs took two of three games at AT&T Park early last week, and his hustle double in the top of the 11th inning Tuesday sparked a two-run inning in a 6-4 victory. He had two doubles in a 3-2, 10-inning victory the next day.
Outman reached out to Gregorius on Saturday, and the D-backs are certain there was no intent. Outman and D-backs bench coach Alan Trammell spoke on the field before Sundays game.
It could have hit him in the face. A lot of bad things could have happened, Gibson said.
"I know Outman talked to him yesterday. We know he wasnt trying to hit him on purpose. Its a hazard of the game. We dont want to see it happen again, for us or against us."
Kubel was 3 for 4 with a home run and two singles in an extended spring training game on Saturday morning. He said he felt ready to return after that, but the D-backs original plan was to send him to Class AAA Reno for a couple of rehab starts. That changed when Gregorius went on the DL.
Its good to be back, said Kubel, who let his quad rest for about a week before returning to normal activity.
I got a few at-bats with the extended team. I know its not the same, but it still feels good. When I played (Saturday), I hit the ball hard, and thats all Im looking for.
Kubel is in about the same position Gregorius was when he was reinstated from the disabled list April 16 after one minor league rehab game.
Well just have to be alert. If he feels anything at all, we dont want to push him too far, get him fatigued and re-injure it, Gibson said.
With division games against the Giants, Padres and Dodgers the next nine days, the D-backs also did not want to play a man short as they did Saturday in a 3-2, 10-inning victory over the Rockies. Gibson was unable to make a double-switch late in that game because he was one man down.
It (playing short) is just not good, so we just amended our plans," Gibson said. "Weve been in close games. Weve been in a lot of extra-inning games. The man is pretty important."

PHOENIX -- Didi Gregorius was sore and had a tinge of a headache Saturday but otherwise appeared to have come out unscathed from his scary beaning Friday night. At the same time, he has not been cleared to play and was to see the Diamondbacks doctor again Saturday afternoon.
Close to normal? he parroted a reporters question.

Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius is feeling soreness after being hit in the helmet by a pitch in Friday night's game against the Colorado Rockies, and will not play in Saturday's game.

As we wrote yesterday, there was still a chance Didi Gregorius would land on the seven-day DL despite his CT scan coming back clean. That's exactly what happened yesterday. However, while losing Gregorius, the Diamondbacks got Jason Kubel back. He was activated from the 15-day DL yesterday.
According to the Diamondbacks' official Twitter feed, Gregorius was placed...
The Arizona Diamondbacks activated outfielder Jason Kubel from the 15-day disabled list. Instead of playing a few rehab games in the minors, the Diamondbacks thought it would be best to get his bat into the lineup sooner-rather-than-later. Finding more power as he ages gracefully in baseball terms, Kubel had 30 home runs in 2012.

Former Chicago Cub Tony Campana is one of the fastest men in baseball. After being acquired by the Diamondbacks this winter, Campana lost out on his bid to make the major league roster, and is currently playing with AAA Reno. On Saturday night, Campana did something pretty cool in the Aces' game against the Fresno Grizzlies: he stole all three bases in one inning. Furthermore...
PHOENIX -- Arizona fans were given a special treat Saturday when a Wade Miley garden gnome was distributed to those in attendance at for the Diamondbacks' game against the Rockies at Chase Field.
For an inning, Miley must have felt the strike zone was about the size of the six-inch figurine, which showed Miley with camo overalls and a fishing pole in his right hand.
Over the 2011 and ’12 seasons with the Chicago Cubs, speedy outfielder Tony Campana stole 54 bases in 59 attempts. That may not seem like a lot, but considering that he only reached base 106 times through those two years, the ratio is crazy. In other words, he stole a bag 51% of the time he got on base.
Campana is now in the Diamondbacks system with Triple-A Reno...

PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks took another hit Friday night, and this one was particularly gruesome.
Shortstop Didi Gregorius suffered a bruised right temple when he was struck in the head by a Josh Outman 94 mph fastball in the seventh inning of the D-backs 6-3 loss to the Rockies on Friday.

Didi Gregorius was hit in the head by a pitch from Josh Outman during the seventh inning of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 6-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Friday night.
Outman had a 2-2 count on Gregorius and let a 93 mph fastball get away from him. The Rockies were up 6-3 at the time and the bases were empty, so with a 2-2 count there is...
