Diamondbacks-catcher
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero's bat flew into the stands and hit a female fan in the leg during his fourth inning at-bat in Friday night's MLB game at Chase Field against the Washington Nationals.

Montero swung at a 1-0 pitch and it went flying about six rows back in the stands behind the D-backs dugout. The female fan grabbed the bat after it bounced off her leg and stomach. The fan had some visible soreness on her leg, but according to AP reports, she was OK and later returned the bat. However, it might be time to consider extending the screens that are behind home plate to protect the fans behind the dugout from injuries.

It was an interesting at-bat for Montero, as on the very next pitch, he fouled a pitch off the mask of home plate umpire Dale Scott, forcing him to leave the game.

D-backs done in by uncharacteristic mistakes

PHOENIX -- Miguel Montero summed up Saturday succinctly. It was a bad beat, he said. The Diamondbacks played a game quite unlike themselves at Chase Field on Saturday, a 6-5 loss to the NL East-leading Nationals in which they could not hold a 4-1 lead behind their best pitcher and top NL Rookie of the Year candidate Wade Miley. The D-backs self-destructed in the fifth inning,...

Collmenter goes on DL; Bloomquist's back OK

PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks placed Josh Collmenter on the disabled list with ulcers Friday, at the same time apparently moving into the clear with Willie Bloomquist. Collmenter did not feel well after arriving home from the D-backs' road trip Thursday night, manager Kirk Gibson said, necessitating a roster move before the start of a three-game homestand against the NL East-leading...

D-backs place Collmenter on DL

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right-hander Josh Collmenter on the 15-day disabled list on Friday with ulcers. Collmenter started the season in the rotation but demoted to the bullpen after four rocky starts. He returned to the rotation to make five starts and has posted a 3-1 record and a 2.41 ERA in his last 18 appearances. Collmenter is 3-3 overall with a 4.24 ERA in 22 games...

Diamondbacks place Collmenter on DL

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed reliever Josh Collmenter on the 15-day disabled list with ulcers, AZCentral.com reported Friday. Manager Kirk Gibson said Collmenter became ill on Thursday. Collmenter is 3-3 with a 4.24 ERA in 22 appearances. The Diamondbacks recalled right-hander Brad Bergesen from Class AAA Reno to take Collmenter's spot on the roster. Bergesen was selected...

D-backs call up Elmore, put Bloomquist on DL

PHOENIX -- Jake Elmores promotion Saturday proves perseverance pays. Elmore was purchased from Class AAA Reno when the Diamondbacks placed Willie Bloomquist on the disabled list with a strained lower back, culminating a climb that began when he signed as a 34th-round draft choice in 2008 after a frustrating season at ASU. I think I was floating above my body for a while, said Elmore...

Diamondbacks 7, Nationals 4

Rookie Patrick Corbin allowed four hits through seven innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat Washington 7-4 on Sunday, snapping the Nationals' season-high winning streak at eight games. Corbin (4-4) retired 16 in a row after Bryce Harper's infield single in the first. The 23-year-old right-hander gave up two runs, struck out seven and walked none. Paul Goldschmidt drove...

Red Sox sign OF Podsednik after trading him

The Boston Red Sox have signed veteran outfielder Scott Podsednik just over a week after trading him to Arizona. Podsednik batted .387 with one home run and seven RBIs in 19 games for the Red Sox before being dealt to the Diamondbacks on July 31. He was released by Arizona after declining an assignment to Triple-A Reno. Podsednik, who was batting ninth and playing left field Friday...

Sox to send Kalish down to make room for Podsednik

News came out yesterday that the Sox re-signed Scott Podsednik -- sent to Arizona in the Craig Breslow deal, but immediately released -- for the remainder of the season. The perplexing move was seemingly injury insurance, but now Dan Roche says the Sox are assigning Podsednik to the big club and sending down Ryan Kalish. I'm inclined to say this move is insane, but the motivation...

Nationals 6, Diamondbacks 5

Ryan Zimmerman singled in two of Washington's five runs in the fifth inning, and the Nationals rallied to beat the sloppy Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5 on Saturday night, stretching their season-best winning streak to eight games. Jason Werth and Michael Morse each had an RBI double in Washington's big inning, which was aided by two Arizona errors and a wild pitch from Diamondbacks...

Nats Head To Arizona As They Continue Their Road Trip Out West

Not only do the Washington Nationals (69-43) comfortably posses the best record in baseball, they also have the best road record of MLB teams (37-21), which they will try to add on to this weekend against the Arizona Diamondbacks (57-55). In the past, the Nationals and the Diamondbacks have been pretty evenly matched, splitting their wins in contests between the two teams just about...
