Diamondbacks-drew-bats
PHOENIX -- Stephen Drew is expected to make his return to the major leagues on Wednesday, a little more than 11 months after suffering a devastating right ankle injury on a play at home plate. Drew, who spent the previous two weeks at Class AAA Reno, will finish his rehab assignment at Class AA Mobile this weekend, manager Kirk Gibson said, and if all goes well he will join the Diamondbacks in Atlanta on Wednesday, when his 20-day rehab assignment expires. It would mark another milestone for Drew, whose ankle was turned at a 180-degree angle when his spikes caught in the dirt around the plate in a game against Milwaukee last July 20. Drew, who put his ankle back in place while he was lying on the ground at the plate, suffered a spiral fracture to the ankle and ligament damage. Drews role when he rejoins the team has not been defined, according to Gibson, who said earlier in the week that he does not expect Drew to be a regular starter, at least at the outset. D-backs put Saunders on DL; Bauer on way?

PHOENIX -- Diamondbacks left-hander Joe Saunders, who missed his scheduled start Friday, was placed on the disabled list Saturday with shoulder inflammation and will miss at least one more start. Is this the opening that brings phenom Trevor Bauer to the major leagues? Time will tell. Bauer, who leads the minor leagues with 111 strikeouts, and Patrick Corbin are the candidates...

Collmenter steps up to back Towers' pledge

PHOENIX General manager Kevin Towers told his radio audience Wednesday that the Diamondbacks will make the playoffs. He prefaced that by saying he was sticking his neck out, and he is supposed to be first among believers. That does not look like much of a stretch right now. The D-backs backed emergency starter Josh Collmenter and four relievers with another home run on 3-0 pitch...

Diamondbacks' Saunders misses start due to shoulder tightness

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Josh Collmenter did not know how special the national anthem would be Friday. That was when he found out he was to start against the Chicago Cubs, about 15 minutes before game time. Scheduled starter Joe Saunders suffered tightness in his left shoulder when he attempted to warm up in the bullpen, so D-backs pitching coach Charlie Nagy turned to...

D-backs bring Saunders off DL

The Arizona Diamondbacks have activated Joe Saunders from the 15-day disabled list and the left-hander will start Saturday against the Chicago Cubs. Saunders, who last pitched June 16, had been shelved because of a strain in his left shoulder. The 31-year-old is 4-5 with a 3.44 ERA in 13 starts this season. Arizona optioned lefty Patrick Corbin to Triple-A Reno, where he will return...

D-backs stay hot with another big day at plate

PHOENIX -- For the first time this season, Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson used the same lineup for the second straight game Saturday. It was partially due to matchups against Cubs left-hander Paul Maholm and partially due to the fact that his regulars are not in need of rest because of the off days sprinkled into the June schedule. And then there is the production. The D-backs...

Gibson comes down with Bieber fever

PHOENIX -- Kirk Gibson is the latest to join the Bieber bandwagon. On Friday afternoon, the Diamondbacks manager said he, too, will add a 2,500 donation to the winning bid on the autographed Justin Bieber trading card that J.J. Putz pulled from a pack brought into the clubhouse in Texas last Tuesday by fellow reliever Brad Ziegler. The proceeds from the auction are to be split...

Saunders replaced by Collmenter against Chicago

Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Joe Saunders has been scratched from his start against the Chicago Cubs because he couldn't get loose in the bullpen. Saunders went through his warmups before Friday night's game, but the team announced just before the first pitch that right-hander Josh Collmenter was taking his place. Saunders had a decent outing his last time out, allowing...

Diamondbacks 10, Cubs 5

Paul Goldschmidt fell a single shy of the cycle, Justin Upton homered for the second time in three games, and the Arizona Diamondbacks climbed above .500 for the first time since May 4 by beating the Chicago Cubs 10-5 on Saturday night. Goldschmidt tripled in a run in Arizona's six-run fourth inning against Paul Maholm (4-6), homered in the sixth, and had a leadoff double. He...

UCLA's Bauer, Cole to play in All-Star Futures Game

NEW YORK Former standout UCLA pitchers Trevor Bauer and Gerrit Cole have been named to the U.S. Teams roster at the upcoming MLB All-Star Futures Game on July 8 at Chase Field in Phoenix. The 14th annual Futures game, slated to take place two days before Major League Baseballs All-Star Game, features both the United States and World rosters, packed with top prospects from all 30...

Diamondbacks 6, Cubs 1

Jason Kubel hit a two-run homer and five relievers filled in for scratched starter Joe Saunders to lift the Arizona Diamondback to a 6-1 win over the Chicago Cubs on Friday night. Saunders had trouble getting loose in the bullpen, so the Diamondbacks turned to one-time starter Josh Collmenter. He gave up a long homer to Geovany Soto in the fourth and Brad Ziegler (4-1) followed...
