The Diamondbacks staved off the Dodgers’ bid to clinch the National League West and clinched the season series with a victory at Chase Field on Wednesday night. The Diamondbacks had a chance to run away with Wednesday’s game early but left eight men on base in the first three innings. They left the bases loaded in the first third and sixth innings and wound up with a total of 14 runners left on base the fourth highest single-game total of the season. In the first and third innings the Diamondbacks loaded the bases with one out without scoring. That left the Diamondbacks with a precarious 4-3 lead until they batted around in the eighth inning getting the first two of five runs on RBI doubles by Aaron Hill and Martin Prado. Brandon McCarthy now has earned three of his five wins on the season in the past five starts. He battled while allowing 10 hits but the last two of those to start the seventh ended his night and cut the lead to 4-3. After Chaz Roe allowed an infield single Joe Thatcher came on and induced a double-play ball from Carl Crawford. Each of the Diamondbacks batting order’s top four players collected two hits. Goldy rough on Dodgers: Paul Goldschmidt continued his onslaught on Dodgers pitching this season by adding two more hits to make him 30 for 76 (.395) against Los Angeles this season. That included his sixth home run and his 19th and 20th RBIs against the Dodgers when he extended his first at-bat to a 10th pitch. Goldschmidt fouled off three fastballs before taking a curve ball to the opposite-field pool. With 34 home runs and 118 RBIs Goldschmidt has the National League lead in both categories. The Dodgers’ Matt Kemp was the last NL player to win both titles in 2011. Manager Kirk Gibson called Goldschmidt’s home run a model at-bat. “We were on ESPN tonight and I wanted Goldy to have a good game selfishly” Gibson said of Goldschmidt’s MVP candidacy. “They’re talking about other very good candidates. We’re certainly biased here. He proves it day in and day out. He’s everything you could want. He’s certainly deserving of Most Valuable Player. We just keeping jamming him down their throat.”
