The Cincinnati Reds need someone to step up in Joey Votto's absence, but so far it hasn't happened. The Reds close a four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday, trying to salvage a split and stay at least tied for first place in the NL Central. Playing its first series without Votto, who underwent surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee Tuesday and is expected to miss three to four weeks, Cincinnati (51-40) has lost two of three against Arizona, including a 7-1 defeat Wednesday. The Reds have totaled eight runs while hitting .229 during the series. They failed attempts at two sacrifice bunts in the early innings Wednesday. "Those are the things you have to do if you're going to play winning baseball," manager Dusty Baker told the Reds' official website. With Votto out, Cincinnati is looking for production from other sources such as Jay Bruce, but his average over the last 11 games fell to .119 after he went 0 for 4 on Wedne...

Reds can overcome temporary loss of Votto

CINCINNATI There are no placards hanging in the Cincinnati Reds clubhouse that say, "Keep a stiff upper lip," but there are, indeed, more stiff upper lips these days than on the Queen's Guard at Buckingham Palace. It is all due to the loss of All-Star first baseman Joey Votto for three weeks after he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Tuesday. The team, of course...

Brewers hope to pounce on Votto-less Reds

The Cincinnati Reds didn't panic when they learned injured slugger Joey Votto would miss at least three weeks, nor did they when trailing by six runs in their latest contest. While teams like the Milwaukee Brewers who are chasing them in the NL Central may be looking to pounce on the Votto-less Reds, Brandon Phillips helped show there's still some pop in the lineup. First...

Pitcher Redmond to take Votto’s roster spot

Of all the people you might have thought would take Joey Votto’s roster spot while he’s on the DL with that arthroscopic knee surgery, I bet you didn’t consider a right-handed pitcher. But John Fay says that Todd Redmond (the guy the Reds just traded Paul Janish for) is coming up today to give the Reds some flexibility if Johnny Cueto’s start tonight … [visit site to read more]

Cincinnati Reds hurting without Joey Votto

As soon as the news broke a friend of mine, a lifelong Cincinnati Reds fan, texted me an ominous statement; “It’s time to find out what the Reds are made of.” With superstar Joey Votto recently announcing he needed knee surgery, and would be out for a month, that statement couldn’t be truer. Votto is in the midst of another MVP level season and his loss could be a huge blow...

Reds' Votto has surgery, RHP Redmond called up

Reds first baseman Joey Votto has had surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee, leaving him sidelined for three to four weeks. An MRI on Monday evening found the tear. Votto hurt the knee June 29 while sliding into a base. The knee had gotten better but began to bother him again, prompting the test. The Reds will have to try to stay in first place in the NL Central without...

Brewers try to pounce on Votto-less Reds

By JEFF BARTL, STATS Writer The Cincinnati Reds didn't panic when they learned injured slugger Joey Votto would miss at least three weeks, nor did they when trailing by six runs in their latest contest. While teams like the Milwaukee Brewers who are chasing them in the NL Central may be looking to pounce on the Votto-less Reds, Brandon Phillips helped show there's still...

Votto, Bautista injured; Halladay, Sabathia return

Joey Votto needs knee surgery, and Jose Bautista is out with a wrist injury. Two of baseball's best hitters were sidelined in a matter of hours Monday, one night before a pair of top pitchers are slated to return to the mound. Roy Halladay and CC Sabathia are both set to come off the disabled list Tuesday - and the way things are shaping up this summer, pennant races all over...

Tuesday news and notes

I guess the biggest news of course would be that Joey Votto is heading to the DL and that could cause a chain reaction throughout the system. Right now, it appears that pitcher Todd Redmond, who we just acquired last week in a trade for Paul Janish, will get the call. I expect that move to last only a day or two due to the Cueto blister (if it shows up, they will pull him early)...

Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix, July 17, 2012: Injuries to Joey Votto, Jose Bautista and David Ortiz

After going through a rough stretch Lance Lynn resumed his dominant early season ways in last night's game against the Brewers.  Lynn pitched 7.0 innings of one run ball and rung up 10, although he only came away with a no decision in the Cards win. Miguel Montero and Mark Reynolds had almost identical nights for their respective teams.  Montero went 3-4 with a HR and...

Latos hit early and often by D’backs

Last Game The Reds suffered an old fashioned walloping last night at the hands of the Diamondbacks, losing 7-1. You’d like to think that it was just the lack of Joey Votto, but unpredictable performances from Mat Latos and an offense unable to string hits together have been hallmarks of this team all year. Next Game The best the Reds can hope for is a split in the 4-game series...

Cueto returns to face Diamondbacks Tuesday

A blister on Johnny Cueto's index finger has healed well enough for him to return to action. The same can't be said for teammate Joey Votto's knee. While Cueto will be on the mound, the Reds learned they must continue to get by without their top hitter Tuesday night against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks. Batting .342 and leading the majors with 36 doubles and a .465...

Reds falter against D-backs, fall 7-1

Mat Latos struggled from the outset on Wednesday. The Reds continued to soldier along without the services of Joey Votto, and the results were what most fans fear could become the norm over the next three-to-four weeks. The offense sputtered and the starting pitching flopped and it all equaled up to a disappointing night at the ballyard for the Redlegs. ...

Kennedy looks to continue mastery of Reds

By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer If the Cincinnati Reds continue to pitch well, they should have a good chance to succeed over the next few weeks even without injured star Joey Votto. After shutting out Arizona to even their four-game set, the Reds hope Mat Latos can continue his undefeated run Wednesday night against the visiting Diamondbacks. Johnny Cueto and four relievers...

FOXSports.com MLB power rankings

By Eric Luchetti and Jase Bandelow FOXSportsMidwest.com Just as the Reds are rising, they lose star first baseman Joey Votto for an extended period. Meanwhile, the very top teams are holding sway. 1 Yankees 55-34 Mark Teixeira is among the American League leaders in home runs, RBI and slugging percentage during the month of July, a very good sign for the first-place Yankees. ...

He was scratched from his Monday start, and placed on the DL to activate Philip Humber from the DL. – Infielder Robert Andino suffered a strained shoulder and according to Brittany Ghiroli of MLB...
