The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right-handed reliever Takashi Saito on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday because of a strained left hamstring.
The 42-year-old Saito has no record with a 6.14 ERA in 10 games with Arizona. Saito was an All-Star in 2007 during a 39-save season with the Dodgers. He totaled 81 saves in his first three major league seasons and has a 2.27 ERA for his career, but has just three saves the last four seasons.
''He's had a hard time staying healthy all year,'' manager Kirk Gibson said. ''He was really sore the other day when the doctors examined him. We're not going to play short at this point.''
Saito began the year on the DL with calf and shoulder injuries, and was activated on July 21. Gibson said Saito was injured in his last appearance on Sunday while allowing two runs on three hits, getting just one out in a 7-4 victory over the Nationals.
The Diamondbacks also purchased the contract of left-hander Mike Zagurski from Triple-A Reno. The 29-year-old Zagurski, who was in uniform for Tuesday night's game at St. Louis, was 0-0 with a 6.18 ERA in 32 games with Arizona before he was designated for assignment on Saturday and outrighted to Reno on Monday.
''He got a little three-day vacation. He needed it, his arm needed it,'' Gibson joked.
Zagurski was claimed by the Diamondbacks off waivers from the Phillies last Sept. 22. He had allowed seven earned runs in 3 1-3 innings his previous six games.
Saito is the third Diamondbacks player to go on the DL this month, joining outfielder Willie Bloomquist and catcher Henry Blanco.

D-backs envision bright future for Owings
Mike Bell remembers the at-bat as if he took it himself.
Chris Owings fell behind in the count, no balls and two strikes, in a game early this season. With the next delivery, the opposing pitcher challenged Owings with a high fastball on the outside part of the plate, the kind of pitch that a right-handed hitter can roll over and turn into an easy groundout.
Owings let the ball...
Corbin Latest Success For D-backs’ Rotation
The first time the D-backs lost Daniel Hudson to injury, it seemed like it would be a big blow to their playoff hopes, but Wade Miley stepped in and opened people’s eyes. When he went down the second time, it seemed like it would really put Arizona in a bind, as while Miley was by then a rotation fixture, Joe Saunders was out of action as well. Neither Josh Collmenter not touted...
Arizona's Goldschmidt proving to be a fast learner
Remember when scouts said Paul Goldschmidt had a "slow" bat? The only things slow these days is his national recognition. Goldschmidt has 34 doubles and 16 home runs in his first full season as the Arizona Diamondbacks' first baseman, and he has developed into the cleanup hitter and a driving force in their offense. His 34 doubles are third in the majors at his...
Diamondbacks' Gibson wants tougher penalties for PED violators</Headline>
For potentially the third time in five years, the Arizona Diamondbacks' playoff lives could be affected by a positive drug test by a slugger on another National League club. That has prompted manager Kirk Gibson, following the announcement Wednesday of Giants left fielder Melky Cabrera's 50-game suspension for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs, to say, "...
The Armchair GM: Is Justin Upton Worth A Look?
How would Upton look as a Met?
The trade deadline came and went without Arizona moving their best player who is still a couple of weeks shy of 25 years old. That shouldn’t surprise anyone. But the real surprise is that a player like Justin Upton was actually available. Upton went number one overall back in the unreal 2005 draft, ahead of Ryan Zimmerman, MVP Ryan Braun, Troy Tulowitzki...
D-backs place Saito on the DL, add Zagurski
Right-hander Takashi Saitos season stalled again Tuesday when the Diamondbacks placed him on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring muscle. Saito has been active for 23 days this season. The D-backs purchased the contract of left-hander Mike Zagurski to replace Saito, a move that returned a left-hander to the bullpen.
Zagurskiwas designated for assignment on Saturday,...
Gibson wants harsher substance penalties
One of the Diamondbacks' top rivals for the National League West Division title will be without its top hitter for the remainder of the season, but D-backs manager Kirk Gibson doesn't think that's punishment enough.
In the wake of the positive test for performance enhancing substances by San Francisco outfielder Melky Cabrera, Gibson said "much stricter" penalties...
Cards-Diamondbacks preview
(AP) -- Adam Wainwright finally looks like the ace he was before missing all of last season due to Tommy John surgery.
That's been the norm when he's faced the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The St. Louis Cardinals turn to Wainwright as they seek a seventh consecutive victory over Arizona on Wednesday night.
It's understandable that the right-hander was erratic throughout much...
