Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew fractured his right ankle while sliding into home during Wednesday's loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.
While additional tests will be conducted Thursday, manager Kirk Gibson did not sound too optimistic for Drew returning to the field anytime soon.
"It's disappointing, and we know how important Stephen is, but if you've been around the game a while, it's fairly common that you're going to lose star players," Gibson told the Arizona Republic. "You hope it doesn't happen to you.
"We'll have to find a way to get through it. There's nothing we can do about it. Wish him well, just hope that he has a good recovery, and he'll be able to resume his career next year."
Drew injured his right ankle attempting a slide into home plate while trying to score from second base on Chris Young's hit. He was called out on the play and had to be assisted from the field with the help of trainers....
