PHOENIX The Diamondbacks' future is now. Again. Left-hander Tyler Skaggs will become the third Diamondbacks' top pitching prospect to arrive in the present Wednesday. Skaggs, who has posted strong numbers at two minor league stops this year, is to make his major league debut in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday against Miami, the D-backs announced Tuesday. He will be promoted from Class AAA Reno for one day as the 26th player on the D-backs' roster, a tweak adopted by the players association this season for split doubleheaders that have been scheduled for at least 48 hours. The D-backs added reliever Sam Demel on Tuesday to fill Stephen Drew's roster spot. Skaggs joins Patrick Corbin and Trevor Bauer as young D-backs' starters who have broken into the majors this season, a threesome that figures heavily in the D-backs' future plans. Skaggs earned the promotion after giving up four runs in 40 23 innings in a recent stretch of seven starts, an 0.89 ERA. He was touched for eight runs in five innings in his most recent Reno start, an outing that is an outlier in what has been a season of growth. "He has just kind of put it all together," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "Can throw any pitch at any time. Pretty efficient. Not afraid to let them put the ball in play, yet he has strikeout stuff. Worked hard on all the stuff we asked him to work on." Skaggs is 9-6 with a 2.87 ERA in 22 starts at Reno and Class AA Mobile, opening the season at Mobile before being promoted when Bauer went from Reno to the major leagues in late June. Skaggs has 116 strikeouts in 122 13 innings while giving up 112 hits and 37 walks. Wade Miley, a top candidate for NL Rookie of the Year award, will start the second game. Skaggs, who turned 21 in July, was the No. 13 rated prospect by Baseball America before the start of the season, and he made his second straight Futures Game appearance this year. His first major league will not be his first start at Chase Field he started the Futures Game here in 2011. Scouts have called Skaggs' curveball his best pitch, and Gibson said movement is what makes it so good. "I like the angle with his breaking ball. I like angles. I like to see something going the other way and going down with different variations. You want to have different pitches to disrupt (a hitter's) timing. You are going to have more success against them, and get away with more mistakes, as well, as long as they are not timing it up. "He possesses that weapon." Skaggs is part of the 2010 Dan Haren trade that keeps on giving. The D-backs got Joe Saunders, Corbin, Skaggs and reliever Rafael Rodriguez. Saunders has 21 victories and Corbin has five since the deal, with Skaggs set to debut. Haren has 29 wins. Follow Jack Magruder on Twitter

Tyler Skaggs delivers in major league debut

PHOENIX If first starts mean anything, Tyler Skaggs deserves an immediate second. He was that poised and that effective in his major league debut Wednesday afternoon. On his first day in the major leagues, Skaggs was almost exactly the pitcher the Diamondbacks projected him to be when they acquired him in the Dan Haren trade in July 2010. Skaggs gave up three hits, the only damage...

Source: D-backs' Saunders on waivers

The Arizona Diamondbacks traded shortstop Stephen Drew on Monday night, saving at least $3.3 million without compromising the team's chances of staying in contention. Could the D-backs be plotting a similar move with left-hander Joe Saunders? The D-backs placed Saunders on trade waivers Tuesday, according to major-league sources. And just as the team had a ready replacement...

Miley gives D-backs a doubleheader sweep

PHOENIX -- Wade Miley was determined to go deep in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader to help his bullpen, and he made sure manager Kirk Gibson knew it. After pitching his seventh scoreless inning, Miley gave Gibson the OK sign as he entered the dugout, and also managed to mention that he would have an extra day of rest before his next start. Gibson did not need any...

D-backs host doubleheader for first time

It's almost fitting that the Arizona Diamondbacks will play the franchise's first doubleheader in Phoenix on a day severe thunderstorms are expected to hit the valley. The inclement weather, however, has nothing to do with the twinbill at the retractable-roof ballpark. The Diamondbacks are hopeful Wednesday's day-night doubleheader goes a bit better than their first...

Marlins drop first game of doubleheader

PHOENIX (AP) -- Tyler Skaggs allowed three hits through 6 2-3 innings in his major league debut, pitching Arizona to a 3-2 victory over the Miami Marlins Wednesday in the opener of the first home doubleheader in Diamondbacks history. The 21-year-old left-hander gave up a two-run homer to Justin Ruggiano in the second, then shut down the Marlins on one hit the rest of his outing...

Umpire Joyce uses CPR to save a life

Major-league umpire Jim Joyce may have saved the life of an Arizona Diamondbacks employee by administering CPR before Monday's game, CBSSports.com reported. About 90 minutes before the game, Joyce, 56, and the other umpires were walking up the tunnel leading to the umpires' dressing room at the Diamondbacks stadium when they saw a woman on the ground having a seizure. ...

Drew's time with D-backs comes to an end

PHOENIX -- All but certain to lose the best shortstop in franchise history, Stephen Drew, to free agency over the winter, the Diamondbacks did what they could to replenish the position by trading Drew to Oakland for Class A shortstop Sean Jamieson after Mondays game. Drew will be reunited with former D-backs manager Bob Melvin in Oakland and will be even more involved in a pennant...

Explaining the Drew trade

It’s not all that surprising that Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew passed through the entire NL and got through to the Athletics on waivers, leading to his trade to Oakland on Monday night. Drew not only is owed nearly $2 million for the rest of the season, but also was batting only .193 with a .601 OPS in 155 plate appearances after missing nearly a year due to a fractured...

Marlins take on D-backs in doubleheader

Marlins go for another win against D-backs

The Arizona Diamondbacks are trying to keep in contention in the NL West. If Giancarlo Stanton hadn't spent a month on the disabled list, the Miami Marlins might be in better position than they are now in the East. The Diamondbacks will try to bounce back Tuesday night following an ugly loss to Stanton and the Marlins. Arizona returned home after completing a 4-2 road trip...

Oakland Athletics acquire Stephen Drew from Diamondbacks

The Oakland Athletics have acquired shortstop Stephen Drew from the Arizona Diamonbacks for infielder Sean Jamieson. The addition of Drew with help fill a need at shortstop for the A’s, as Cliff Pennington and Adam Rosales have failed to provide much offense for manager Bob Melvin. Drew, a former first round pick by the Diamondbacks in the 2004 amateur draft, is batting just .193...
