Some news is popping up today now that is Monday. Hey I guess even MLB front offices take the weekends off during their offseason. There are a bunch of great articles today, including three from the “where are they now” category. Also I generally don’t like putting multiple articles from the same website up, but today I am making an exception to that rule as I have two from MLB Trade Rumors as well as two from this very site. The Padres have their name linked to another player this week, which means that by Wednesday they will have dropped out of the running. And also once again another team is going after a player that the Padres have looked at for some time. You snooze you lose? All that information can be found below, so let’s get to it: Submit articles and follow me on twitter Follow @M_Rennick Padres among three teams that are interested in Shaun Marcum – MLBTR “Shaun Marcum is drawing interest from the Padres, Pirates and Rangers, Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports rep...

Luke Gregerson to Pitch for Team USA

Luke Gregerson It is being reported on twitter via Jon Heyman of cbssports.com that Luke Gregerson will be part of Team USA in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.  The 28-year old Gregerson is coming off a great season in which he appeared in a career high 77 games, allowing only 19 earned runs in 71.2 innings, while also recording nine saves. Gregerson said Joe Torre called him...

Daily Friar 1.15.13

Here we are with another quiet day on the Padres side of things. The biggest news in San Diego right now is that Mike McCoy is going to be the new head coach for the Chargers. This is coming a matter of weeks after the season ended for the Chargers. What have the Padres done in the matter of months after the season ended? Yeah that’s what I thought. My frustration isn’t coming...

Three for the Show: Catchers

This is the first in a 10-part series where I will identify the top three players at each position in the Padres’ minor league system. Up first: Catchers. The depth chart at catcher is certainly an area that presents an opportunity for improvement. The gap between the haves and the have nots for this position is fairly substantial. There are two to three guys who have the potential...

Adrian Gonzalez – “I Bleed Dodger Blue”

Adrian Gonzalez – “I bleed Dodger blue” Even while in San Diego, it always seemed like Adrian Gonzalez would not be happy.  Small market, big park, no national love.  One of the greatest hitters in Padres history always seemed as though he was just playing his days out in San Diego.  Loved by the fan base and the Mexican community, a combination of his desire to pursue...

Ex-Padre Shortstop Enzo Hernandez Found Dead; Suicide Suspected

Enzo Hernandez was a light hitting base stealer for the San Diego Padres in their early years.  The 63-year -old former shortstop was found dead in his home in El Tigre, in his native Venezuela, according to the Chicago Sun-Times via Associated Press.  While no details are yet available, authorities have indicated that it was a suicide. Hernandez' greatest value may...

Sources: Rangers, Pirates, Padres pursuing Marcum

The Texas Rangers, Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres are among the teams pursuing free-agent starter Shaun Marcum, according to major-league sources. Marcum went 7-4 with a 3.70 ERA in 21 starts for Milwaukee during an injury-shortened 2012 season. But he finished healthy, making three consecutive quality starts to end the year. The Rangers have made no secret of their need...

Pirates Interested in Shaun Marcum

Earlier this evening, Jon Morosi reported that the Pittsburgh Pirates were still talking with Francisco Liriano. Morosi followed up with a tweet noting that the Pirates were one of the teams interested in free agent Shaun Marcum. Shaun Marcum, free agent starter, is drawing interest from Padres, Pirates and Rangers, sources say. @mlbonfox — Jon Morosi (@jonmorosi) January 14, 2013...

Pirate Logic, Liriano vs. Marcum

Now that it appears the Liriano deal may be on hold the Pirates are rumored to be interested in Shaun Marcum. What annoys me most is the logic behind these moves.  Liriano was signed basically at the expense of Jeff Karstens.  The reason Karstens wasn’t signed was because he was an injury risk.  Well so [...]

ZiPS, Shaun Marcum, Francisco Liriano, etc.

In general, the arc of winter for a Pirate fan goes like this:  Depression bought about by the end of the season. Talking yourself into the coming season's team as the front office makes trades and signings. Release of the ZiPS projections, followed by the crushing realization that upcoming Year Y will be no better than the prior Year X.  Today: FanGraphs...
