After today’s 12-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox, Dan Wheeler was designated for assignment, clearing a spot on the club’s 25-man roster.

Wheeler entered today’s game in the seventh inning, trailing 6-1.  He proceeded to allow six runs in just one inning , cementing the loss for the Tribe.

When asked if the Indians had given him a reason for the move, Wheeler replied, “Did they really have to?”

No corresponding roster move has yet been announced.  Wheeler was serving as the bullpen’s long-man.  Those duties may now go to Jairo Ascensio, with the team expected to keep Nick Hagadone with the Big League Team after Rafael Perez’s stint on the DL is over.

Regardless, a roster addition should be announced shortly to cover the interim.  Frank Herrmann, Hector Ambriz, and Jeremy Accardo are all currently on the team’s 40-man roster, and would seem to be candidates for the job.

Indians designate Wheeler for assignment

The Cleveland Indians have designated struggling reliever Dan Wheeler for assignment. The Indians made the move on Monday, one day after Wheeler gave up six runs on five hits in one inning of a loss to the Boston Red Sox. The right-hander didn't allow a run in seven of his first eight appearances for the Indians, but gave up nine runs in his last four outings. Wheeler had an...

Hoynes: Tomlin out, McAllister in for tonight’s start

Josh Tomlin will miss tonight’s start against the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park due to a sore wrist, according to The Plain Dealer’s Paul Hoynes. Tomlin, 1-2 with a 4.67 ERA in 6 games (5 starts) this season, is believed to have injured the wrist from gripping the ball too hard in his last start against the White Sox in game two of the doubleheader Tuesday. He may go on the DL...

Indians Weekend Wrapup: The Anger Edition

This has not been a great week in for our boys. The weekend made things worse. For the first time this season, your first place Cleveland Indians lost three games in a row and a road series. The Boston Red Sox, who came into the weekend a legitimate dumpster fire, owned the Tribe and came through with big hits when they needed to. The Indians on the other hand couldn’t be clutch...

Closer Talk: Tie Games, A Look Back to ’07, and When To Throw Your Best

Editor’s Note: Jon and I had a friendly Twitter debate over this issue on Tuesday night. Read his solid take on using Chris Perez in such a scenario. On Tuesday night, Chris Perez entered the 10th inning against the White Sox at home with the game tied at three. He exited with the White Sox leading 5-3, after allowing two runs on two hits in just his third non-save appearance...

Cleveland Indians pitcher Josh Tomlin has been scratched from his start against the Red Sox because of a sore right wrist. Tomlin will be replaced by Zach McAllister, who was recalled from Triple-A Columbus this week and recorded his first major league win against Chicago in the opener of a day-night doubleheader. McAllister allowed two earned runs and six hits in a career-high...

Box Score: Indians 5, Twins 4

The Indians were in control of this one for most of the night, until the eighth anyways, when the Twins tied the score at 4. All was not lost however, as the Tribe came back in the top of the ninth, scoring the go ahead run off the bat of Choo. Perez nailed down the win in the bottom half of the inning.  Cleveland AB R H RBI HR BB K SB LOB Season Avg S. Choo rf 4 0 1 1...

Choo's single in 9th lifts Indians over Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The Cleveland Indians had lost three in a row and five of their previous six, with another strong start to the season threatening to start swirling down the drain. They appeared headed toward another loss when the bullpen faltered in the eighth inning before Shin-Soo Choo came to the rescue. Choo hit the go-ahead RBI single in the ninth inning to back Jeanmar...

Box Score: Red Sox 4, Indians 1

The Indians fell victim to a rookie left-handed pitcher in Felix Doubront that kept them guessing most of the night. Felix lasted six innings, allowing the lone run on three hits, walking two and striking out five as the Red Sox took the third game of the series 4-1. Zach McAllister, who was called upon to start on short notice for the injured Josh Tomlin, pitched well enough to...

Boston fans finally cheer Damon again

Johnny Damon finally felt welcome again at Fenway Park. Damon received a hearty round of applause when video highlights of his days with the Red Sox played during Boston's 12-1 win over Cleveland on Sunday. Now a member of the Indians, Damon says it was the first warm reception he's had in Boston since he left the Red Sox after the 2005 season and signed as a free agent...

Derek Lowe Speechless After Red Sox Replace Pitcher's Stolen World Series Ring

Derek Lowe is a very talkative guy, but even he couldn't muster up words following a classy gesture by the Red Sox organization. John Henry, Larry Lucchino and Tom Werner presented Lowe with a 2004 World Series ring to replace the one that was stolen from his Florida home last month, and the Indians hurler couldn't have been any more pleased. "You know me, I can talk...

Mauer, Willingham look to bust Lowe's streak

While some believed Derek Lowe's better years may be behind him following a disappointing 2011, it's safe to say he still has plenty left in the tank. The right-hander, however, hasn't experienced much success against the Minnesota Twins over the course of his career. Seeking a fourth consecutive win, Lowe looks to help the visiting Cleveland Indians continue their...

5/13 Game Recap: Indians 1 - Red Sox 12

Player of the Game Pitching a perfect 8th inning with 2 strike outs, Jairo Asencio won today's Player of the game with a score of 1.50. Just a reminder, when a relief pitcher wins this award, it means that the Indians did not provide and offense and that their starting pitcher had a poor outing. Asencio has won 3 Player of the Game awards this year. Michael Brantley came in...

Derek Lowe has stolen World Series ring replaced by Boston Red Sox

The Cleveland Indians are off to an 18-16 start and are currently in first place in the American League’s Central division. A big part of that has been the performance of pitcher Derek Lowe, who has a 2.47 ERA through seven starts and leads the club in wins with 5. Away from the [...]
