The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated Dana Eveland for assignment, and are expected to make two additions to the 25-man roster today. The Pirates acquired Eveland at the start of June, after being designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays. Pittsburgh traded relief pitching prospect Ronald Uviedo for 23 days of Eveland's service.

Eveland made just three appearances with the Pirates, pitching 9.2 innings, with an 8.38 ERA, and a 3:5 K/BB ratio. He wasn't much better before the trade, with a 6.45 ERA in 44.2 innings, and a 21:27 K/BB ratio. Meanwhile, Uviedo has a 3.74 ERA on the season in 43.1 innings at the AA level, with a 40:21 K/BB ratio. Since the trade he has moved to Toronto's AA rotation, where he has posted a 4.29 ERA in 21 innings, with a 12:9 K/BB ratio. He's better suited for a back of the bullpen role, although Toronto is probably just giving him as many innings as possible.

I said it at the time of the deal that this was a bad move for the Pirates. The fact that Uviedo was dealt for just 23 days of Eveland makes it worse. The Pirates made the trade because they felt another team would have traded for Eveland. They'll get a chance to see if that is true, as they now have ten days to trade, waive, or release Eveland.

The Pirates now have two open spots on their 25-man roster, and two open spots on the 40-man roster. They also have two open spots in the pitching staff, with Zach Duke going on the 15-day disabled list. My guess is that Charlie Morton will be activated from the 15-day disabled list to take one of those spots, and to take the open spot in the rotation. I also wouldn't be surprised if Justin Thomas gets the call to the majors to help out the bullpen.

Thomas has been excellent in Indianapolis this year, with a 1.30 ERA in 34.2 innings, and a 34:3 K/BB ratio out of the bullpen. The left handed reliever is not currently on the 40-man roster, so he would take one of the two open spots. Other possibilities include:

Wilfredo Ledezma - 1.35 ERA in 26.2 innings pitched, 33:15 K/BB ratio.

Vinnie Chulk - 0.87 ERA in 20.2 innings pitched since returning from an injury that affected him in April. 20:5 K/BB ratio during that stretch.

Hayden Penn - 4.02 ERA in 47 innings as a starter, 44:17 K/BB ratio.

None of the above players are on the 40-man roster, so like Thomas, they would take one of the open spots. Daniel McCutchen is also a candidate to take the starting spot instead of Charlie Morton. McCutchen has a 2.73 ERA in 26.1 innings spanning four starts in the month of June, with a 15:7 K/BB ratio.
