(Photo/Orlin Wagner/AP) It’s been a wild ride for Daniel Bard and the Boston Red Sox and it didn’t get better over the weekend. After a rough outing with the Lowell Spinners on Saturday night, the Red Sox have opted to designate Bard for assignment. The move was made to make room for two new acquisitions by the Red Sox in Quintin Berry and John McDonald. Bard has fallen far since his debut with the Red Sox in May of 2009. The once go-to reliever has been on a downslide ever since September of 2011. The right hander had back-to-back outstanding seasons in 2010 and 2011. Bard tossed 74.2 innings in 2010, his best season with the Red Sox, posting a 1-2 record with 32 holds, 76 strikeouts and an era of 1.93 earned run average. He followed up the 2010 season with a almost equally as good 2011 season. In 2011, Bard set the club record with 25 consecutive scoreless appearances, running from May 27 to July 31, 2011. The reliever posted a 2-9 record with a 3.33 earned run average, 34 holds and 74 strikeouts over 73 innings. Bard’s declined started in September of 2011, when he posted an 0-4 record with a 10.64 earned run average, issuing more walks (nine) than he had in the previous three months combined (eight). “Based on win probability added (WPA), the player most responsible for Boston’s collapse was Bard,” according to ESPNBoston.com. The Red Sox had Bard in the starting rotation to start the 2012 season. He started the season 5-6 with a 5.24 earned run average, striking out 34 while walking 37 and hitting eight batters. He was later optioned to the Pawtucket Red Sox. The most recent siting of Bard was with the Spinners (Single-A) on Saturday night where he tossed one inning of work with a wild pitch, walking four and striking out two. It is unsure wether there is another team out there who is interested in swooping in a grabbing Bard while he is available. If the pitcher is untouched and is just removed from the 40-man roster, the Red Sox organization hopes its just another set back and Bard will eventually return to the majors someday.
