Yes, Darren Ford. A defensive replacement with a .200 OBP and an .000 BA. Why you ask? Because in the last five games, none of the other current greats came through. Tim Lincecum, Brian Wilson, the offense, and everyone else in a Giants uniform kept coming up short of expectations.
Except Darren Ford. He did exactly what we expect of him. When a ball lands on the ground he starts running toward the next base. Darren Ford. Knows exactly when the throw is going to reach the bag and gets there a split-second before. Darren Ford.
On a night where the Giants couldn't hit, after a series in which they couldn't pitch or hit at the the same time, during a season in which every performance and move is getting questioned and fans are biting their nails already, Darren Ford saved the day, and for that he is better than Willie Mays and Barry Bonds at their peaks combined.
This is exactly the kind of irrational blog writing that can occur when a losing streak is snapped. The Giants' problems are too big for a couple of little league sprints along the base paths to solve. But if they had lost tonight to one of the worst teams in baseball for their fifth straight loss the nail biting might have increased to hand-wringing and possibly even full blown eyebrow raising.
So for that, Darren Ford is my greatest of all time. Unless they go back to losing tomorrow. Win this series, dudes.
