Dave Roberts Talks Diego Cartaya and Other Catching Options with Smith Out
USA TODAY Sports

The Dodgers will be without the services of Will Smith for at least a few days after he was placed on the 7-day concussion IL after taking a few foul tips to the mask during the series in San Francisco. To bring their catching depth back up to two true catchers at the big league level, the team signed veteran backstop Austin Wynn.

The signing of Wynn came as something of a surprise considering the Dodgers have several catching options in the minor league ranks, including the club's top prospect, Diego Cartaya.

Manager Dave Roberts was asked if there was any consideration given to calling up the number 12 prospect in baseball.

“No, there wasn't. Diego's off to a good start (at Double-A) ... He needs to play. So Diego was not an option.”

Dave also was asked about some of the catchers the Dodgers deployed during spring training. He said the team's preference was to go with the experience of Wynns over guys like Hunter Feduccia or Patrick Mazieka.

The 21-year-old Cartaya has gotten off to a nice start at AA, hitting .250 with a double, one home run, and 5 RBI in 5 games. Considering it's his first time playing at the AA level, it makes sense that the front office opted to not rush him to the big leagues for what should be a brief absence for Will Smith.
