The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Baltimore Orioles in 18 innings Friday night on a walk-off single from outfielder David DeJesus.  Per usual walk-off wins, a celebratory helmet toss and celebratory bouncing commenced.  But, the celebratory bouncing by Rays utilityman Kelly Johnson was halted for a minute after DeJesus’ helmet fell from the sky and nailed him on the back. Johnson runs out and is on DeJesus’ left in this GIF (created by @CorkGaines). via @CorkGaines Here’s the whole video: [Thanks to CB for the tip]

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Evan Longoria says he has had more consistent years, but his influence has been valuable to the Tampa Bay Rays' postseason push. The Tampa Bay chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America named the third baseman the Rays' most valuable player Friday in a presentation of its annual awards. Outfielder Wil Myers was voted the team'...

Jesse Crain expected to be available for Rays on Monday

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Reliever Jesse Crains wait could soon be over. Crain, on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain, is expected to be available for the Tampa Bay Rays in their series finale Monday against the Baltimore Orioles at Tropicana Field. Crain said Sunday morning there were no lingering issues with the troublesome strain, and it was the teams call when to activate...

Rays reinstate Crain from DL

The Tampa Bay Rays have reinstated reliever Jesse Crain from the 60-day disabled list. Tampa Bay acquired the injured Crain from the Chicago White Sox on July 29. The right-hander had gone 2-3 with a 1.15 ERA in 38 appearances before being placed on the DL on July 3 because of a right shoulder strain. The Rays designated right-hander J.D. Martin for assignment before Monday'...

Jennings, Cobb key to Rays win

The Tampa Bay Rays rode the momentum of a marathon victory to another big win. Desmond Jennings drove in four runs, Alex Cobb took a three-hit shutout into the ninth inning, and the Rays beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 on Saturday in a matchup of exhausted teams to maintain their lead in the AL wild-card race. Wil Myers: Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda?

I was scanning through my channels last night and with nothing on turned to the MLB Network where they were doing highlights of all the teams that were in the hunt for a Wild Card. They showed highlights of Tampa Bay’s 5-1 win over Baltimore to grab one of the Wild Card spots. I was half asleep when I was jolted to attention after I heard one of the hosts say that Wil Myers was...

Rays' bullpen comes up big in collective win vs. Orioles

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- There are few solo acts in baseball, save the once-every-blue-moon no-hitter, or a player who hits for the cycle, or a defensive display so unbelievable that it lives through time on highlight reels or blooper tapes. This is a game that's more chorus than a lone voice bellowing into a megaphone, and if all parts work in unison, they make music of their...

Romero Good, Bullpen Better As Rays Down O's

Enny Romero was impressive in his first major league start a 3-1 win over the Orioles. September 22nd is an unexpected good day in Rays history. It marked the debut of David Price in 2008 and Matt Moore in 2011. Today it marked the debut of another young left hander Enny Romero. Romero who spent all but one start this season in Double-A Montgomery was called into action thanks...

ICYMI: Rays and O's Play 18-Inning Almost 7 Hour Marathon

Baseball is a lot of things, most of the references you are probably thinking of would have to do with running a marathon. The analogy certainly fit Friday night as the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays played an 18-inning, 6 hour 54 minute game that ended around 2 a.m Saturday morning. The Rays won the game 5-4 on a David DeJesus single and took over the top spot in the...

Chewbacca, KISS props appear to help Rays rally in 18th

Things got a little weird for the Tampa Bay Rays early Saturday morning. As if being locked in an extended struggle at Tropicana Field with the Baltimore Orioles wasn't enough, a few curious characters stopped by their dugout to make their 5-4 victory in the 18-inning marathon even zanier. Rays players have been known to use props in post-victory dance parties. So when the traditional...

Tampa Bay Rays lose 8-2 to Texas Rangers

The Tampa Bay Rays had a chance to grab some breathing room in the race for the AL wild cards. Hurt by a shaky outing from Matt Moore, it just didn't work out. Moore allowed three home runs for the first time this season and Tampa Bay lost 8-2 to the Texas Rangers on Thursday night, leaving the teams tied atop the wild-card standings. ''There's someone responsible...

Orioles lose again to Rays after marathon defeat

Miguel Gonzalez's margin for error was small, and he exceeded it by walking the first two Tampa Bay Rays in the fifth inning. Desmond Jennings made the Baltimore pitcher pay with a three-run home run, and the Rays went on to beat the Orioles 5-1 in a matchup of exhausted teams on Saturday to maintain their lead in the AL wild-card race.
