The Red Sox kick off their 2012 interleague slate on Friday, and David Ortiz will not be in the starting lineup. The interleague schedule always provides a set of challenges for the Sox, as they're forced to decide what to do with Ortiz when playing in National League ballparks. We saw Adrian Gonzalez briefly shift to the outfield last year, but he'll remain at first base with Ortiz out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Phillies. Gonzalez will bat third and Cody Ross, who's playing right field, will take over the cleanup spot. Daniel Nava (left field) and...
BEST OF MAXIM
Red Sox fans expecting Daisuke Matsuzaka to be able to help out the Red Sox rotation have been hit with a dose of reality thanks to Dice-K’s less than stellar rehab starts. Last night Dice-K struggled, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits, no walks (the real shocker in his line), and 2 home runs allowed.
In his 5 rehab starts, Dice-K has struggled mightily with allowing home runs. In his...
I asked two general managers Thursday about Kevin Youkilis.
The first said that he would need to see Youkilis play for an extended period before determining whether his team had interest, citing Youkilis' declining offense, defense and health.
The second said he would not claim Youkilis and the approximately $9 million remaining on his contract if the Red Sox released the veteran...
GETTIN' JIGGLY WIT IT
Check out this video of a female Boston Red Sox fan at Fenway Park rocking out to the old Will Smith song "Gettin jiggy with it." This is a great way to get attention these days in ballparks. Just start dancing like crazy and you can expect some fan with a cell phone to film it and post it on YouTube in no time.

POP A STRESS TAB
In the ninth inning of last night's Phillies-Red Sox game, Marlon Byrd grounded out to Jimmy Rollins, who's throw appeared to beat Byrd to the bag by maybe half a step. The throw also appeared to pull Ty Wigginton off of the bag, but first base umpire Gary Darling still called Byrd out. Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine went nuclear after the call, wildly gesturing at Darling...
Red Sox (18-20)
8 a.m. ET: After getting hit by a fly ball in Tuesday's batting practice, Felix Doubront is fine and will take the hill for the Red Sox (17-20) against the Rays (23-14). The lefty has won two straight decisions -- over the Royals and Indians -- and will look to extend his luck. When he took the mound against the Rays on April 15, Doubront was solid, allowing four runs and nine...
Daniel Bard's rough 1st inning put the Sox in an early 4-0 hole en route to a 6-4 loss in the opening game of the 3-game interleague weekend series at Citizens Bank Park. Bard walked 3 in the Phillies' opening frame and all 3 came around to score. He lasted 5 innings, charged with 5 runs on 3 hits, 5 walks and 2 hit batters. The Sox actually outhit the Phillies 8-6 including...
ST. PETERSBURG -- A night after their five-game winning streak was stopped, the Boston Red Sox regained their mid-May momentum, beating the Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 at Tropicana Field on Thursday. Cody Ross had a bases-loaded walk, solo home run and two-run single, and Marlon Byrd hit his first home run for Boston, helping the Red Sox gain a split in the two-game series. Felix Doubront...
Bobby Valentine has been ejected 38 times as a big league manager. Friday's ejection was his first as skipper of the Red Sox. Valentine was ejected following an argument stemming from a close play at first base in the ninth inning. Marlon Byrd appeared to beat out a throw to first, but first-base umpire Gary Darling ruled the baserunner, Jimmy Rollins, was safe. That led to Valentine...
Doubront has been a pleasant surprise for Sox fans so far in the season. Don't tell anyone, but the Boston Red Sox have been playing quality baseball as of late. Winning six out of their last seven, Boston sits at 18-20 on the season and are currently six and a half games behind the first place Baltimore Orioles. Yes let that sit for a minute, the first-place Baltimore Orioles...
You have never seen anything like this. Rays second baseman Will Rhymes gets nailed in the forearm by Boston reliever Franklin Morales and he passes out. Over a minute later. Longest delay between...

Albert Pujols has managed to end his home run drought in Los Angeles, but the numbers are still far from cutting it. A quarter of the way through the season, the $240 million man is still hitting .214 with an on-base percentage of only .248. He has driven in only 18 runs and has three homers, but Pujols is finally showing signs of life at the plate. As someone who knows plenty about...
Former Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon and the Phillies begin interleague play against Papelbon's former teammates. (Philliedelphia/Kevin Durso)
For the first time since Opening Day, the Phillies are above .500. This, then, marks the first time they enter a series above .500. Just in time for interleague play.
The Phillies host their first interleague series against the...
Times are good for Ortiz, Saltalamacchia and the Boston Red Sox
These are the kind of series wins that good teams get done.
Going on the road against a Philadelphia team that is always a tough out at home, the Boston Red Sox came into Citizens Bank Park and won 2 of 3 games to move 5 back of the Tampa Bay Rays for second place and 7 games back of the Baltimore Orioles for the division...
