The David Ortiz show was in high definition last night at Fenway Park. The Red Sox designated hitter went 3-of-5 with two home runs and four RBI and in the sixth inning of the 20-4 stampede over the Detroit Tigers — a potential playoff preview — Ortiz collected his 2000th career hit with a double off the base of The Wall in left-center field. Ortiz made it to second standing up and after Detroit reliever Al Alburquerque got the ball back he allowed the moment to sink in for the slugger who was showered with applause from the Fenway Park crowd. The man responded by removing his helmet and patting his chest in appreciation to the fans. “It was great getting to that milestone and accomplishing numbers that at some point when you are not playing baseball you do count them” Ortiz said. “You thank God for giving you a nice career.” The standings and milestones keep piling up for Ortiz in a Red Sox uniform. He is currently one of three active players to record 2000 hits 400 home runs and 1400 RBI. At this stage of his career Ortiz continues to outshine Alex Rodriguez and Albert Pujols the other two active players with those numbers. Ortiz moved into a tie with Mike Piazza for 46th all-time with his 427th home run and the multi-homer game was the 41st of his career and 39th in a Red Sox uniform padding his leading total for the franchise. The major milestone marked the second one reached by Ortiz at home this season. On July 2 Ortiz stroked his 500th double in a 4-1 win over the San Diego Padres. His 400th home run came on the road in Oakland during the 2012 season and he has come to relish the opportunities to set history in a Red Sox uniform at Fenway a place that changed the complexion of his career.
