Pretty much. Dee Gordon will undergo surgery on his right thumb after an MRI today revealed a torn ulnar collateral ligament. Gordon injured his thumb sliding head-first into third base during Wednesday night's game -- a 4-1 Dodger victory. The Dodgers recalled Luis Cruz a few days ago, so he'll be Gordon's primary replacement until he's either healthy or the Dodgers acquire someone else. This is where Jed Lowrie comes into play. If you'll recall, the Dodgers were discussing trade options with the Houston Astros on Friday that, presumably, began with a Zach Lee-for-Lowrie swap. The talks later devolved into Garrett Gould-for-Carlos Lee (who was traded to the Miami Marlins yesterday... hooray!). It appears the Dodgers have some interest in the 28-year-old shortstop and willing to deal their top prospect. And now the Dodgers are desperate for a replacement and to stay in the National League playoff chase. The Astros could be chomping at the bit ...

Lack of hits, runs continue to plague Astros

HOUSTON This has become an open, festering sore, the type of severe wound that lingers well beyond any reasonable timetable for recovery. The Astros can't hit therefore they can't score. Reasons are myriad, some more rational than others, but the bottom line remains the same. With their losing streak having reached nine games, their deficiencies on the mound and defensively...

Expect Astros manager change in '13

No team has fired its manager this season. But at least one is expected to make a move after the season ends, according to major-league sources. The Houston Astros, under new ownership and a new front office, likely will dismiss manager Brad Mills, sources said. Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said Friday that no change is imminent, and that he will not make a decision on Mills...

Astros ship Carlos Lee to Marlins for prospects

The Houston Astros traded slugger Carlos Lee to the Miami Marlins on Wednesday in exchange for a pair of prospects. The Astros acquired third baseman Matt Dominguez and left-handed pitcher Rob Rasmussen in the deal. The 36-year-old Lee spent five-plus seasons with the Astros and is hitting .287 with five homers and 29 RBI in 65 games this year. Houston manager Brad Mills removed...

Source: Marlins acquire Carlos Lee

The Marlins, seeking to upgrade their production at first base, acquired Carlos Lee from the Astros on Wednesday, according to a major-league source. The Astros will receive two minor leaguers, third baseman Matt Dominguez and pitcher Rob Rasmussen, a source said. As part of the deal, the Astros will cover all of the approximately $9 million remaining on Lee's contract except...

Game 82: Pirates 2 Astros 0

After a solid week of bashing the opponents' brains in with big hit after big hit, I've been hoping to see the Pirates' pitching staff slowly step back into the spotlight. It's not that I have any problems with how the Pirates have been playing lately -- I'm not one to quibble with results like this -- it's just that good teams tend to be balanced teams and...

Lee departs; Astros fall to Pirates 6-4

Carlos Lee's locker sat empty in the middle of a quiet clubhouse shortly after Houston's 6-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday. After more than five seasons, the burly first baseman is on his way to the Miami Marlins in exchange for minor leaguers Matt Dominguez and Rob Rasmussen. Neither player is ready for the majors. Too bad. The struggling club could certainly...

Gallardo seeks eighth straight win vs. Astros

While it's been an up-and-down first half of the season for the Milwaukee Brewers, the Houston Astros have been spiraling steadily downward for the last several weeks. Having to face Yovani Gallardo doesn't look like it will help Houston. Gallardo seeks to win his eighth straight start against the Astros, who try to avoid a ninth consecutive loss overall in Friday night...

Lee traded to Marlins for prospects

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The Houston Astros traded slugger Carlos Lee to the Miami Marlins on Wednesday in exchange for a pair of prospects. The Astros acquired third baseman Matt Dominguez and left-handed pitcher Rob Rasmussen in the deal. The 36-year-old Lee spent five-plus seasons with the Astros and is hitting .287 with five homers and 29 RBI in 65 games this year. Houston manager...

Pirates 2, Astros 0

Jeff Karstens scattered four hits over eight innings and the surging Pittsburgh Pirates blanked the Houston Astros 2-0 on Thursday night. Karstens (2-2) struck out a season-high eight against just one walk as the Pirates completed their first four-game sweep of the Astros at home since 1979. Joel Hanrahan pitched a perfect ninth for his 22nd save. Garrett Jones and Casey McGehee...

Would the San Houstiego AstroPads Make the Playoffs?

AstroPads Consider this hypothetical situation carefully, because it merits serious discussion.  If Major League Baseball had somehow combined the Houston Astros and the San Diego Padres prior to the 2012 season, would that Frankenstein’s monstrosity of a team make the playoffs?.  To a degree, you can ignore the 2 teams current records of 32-47 and 30-50, respectively.  Need...
