TEAMS: Detroit Tigers
When the Detroit Tigers traded for Delmon Young in mid-August, I was ecstatic, as many Tigers fans were. We had just gotten a young power hitting outfielder with potential for seemingly nothing, and Brennan Boesch had been recently diagnosed with a thumb injury, one which the Tigers’ staff had no clue the severity of. Magglio Ordonez was also amidst a season-long struggle at the plate, as was Ryan Raburn, so the Tigers were definitely in need of some help at the corner outfield position. For a few weeks, Young did help the Tigers; he slid right into the 3-hole nicely in place of Boesch when he went down indefinitely. The whole Detroit Tigers offense took off when he joined the line-up. After taking a closer look at Delmon Young, however, I am convinced that during Delmon’s time with the Tigers, he did not help the team aside from the first couple of weeks. He has had similar “production” throughout his career.

Hellickson has successful role model in Verlander
Some rookie of the year winners quickly fade away. Some grow into MVPs, as Justin Verlander and Milwaukee's Ryan Braun did this season. Tampa Bay right-hander Jeremy Hellickson realistically desires to fit in somewhere between those extremes. Hellickson this season became the first starting pitcher in either league to become the rookie of the year since Verlander in 2006.
