My Sports Rumors:
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Ryan Dempster is definitely a throwback baseball player. With Cubbies struggling, Dempster has gone public in saying that he is open to a trade. He’s willing to do whatever it means to help the Cubs succeed even if it means he’s not there. Which is pretty impressive as he’s a player with 10-and-5 rights.
“I think I would be doing everybody in that locker room and anybody who is a Cubs fan and most importantly the Cubs organization a huge disservice if I didn’t put all my focus and attention on trying to make my start and do the best I can to help us win,” Dempster said Wednesday on “The Waddle & Silvy Show” on ESPN 1000. “You’re in a situation where if it does happen, they are going to do what’s best for the Chicago Cubs, and I’m all for that.” (via ESPN Chicago)
“Hopefully I’m here, but if not it’s somewhere that can ultimately give them the best opportunity to improve the Cubs for the future. I believe I’m a part of that and trying to help us for the future and help us for the present as well.” (via ESPN Chicago)
Even with Ryan in the final year of his contract and 34-years old he should be able to get the Cubs some decent prospects in a deal. The reason? He’s having a pretty damn good year. He’s got an ERA of 2.59, good for tenth in the National League, with 57 strikeouts over 66 innings pitched.
My guess is a trade happens. Dempster is in the final year of his contract and it’s highly unlikely the Cubbies bring him back. So it would make much more sense to trade now for an established prospect then receiving a draft pick in return when he leaves via free agency.

Starlin Castro has the talent to be an elite major league shortstop, but the question has become whether he has the mental makeup. So far, the outlook isn't good for the 22-year-old. Cubs manager Dale Sveum called out Castro following Monday's 3-2 loss to the Giants, during which the shortstop committed another costly mental mistake. "It's the last straw," Sveum...
In one way, interleague play resumes at just the right time for the Cubs. Chicago opens a three-game weekend series Friday at Minnesota. Manager Dale Sveum likes the idea of having an extra hitter, with the designated hitter in use for the games at American League parks. He's even more happy that left fielder Alfonso Soriano will move into the DH spot for all three games this...
Iowa Rizzo went 3-5 and Brett Jackson drew a pair of walks. TRANSFORMED! Josh Vitters went 0-5. Smokies Jae Hoon Ha went 1-3 with a BB and Alberto Cabrera lowered his ERA to 2.57 while earning his 5th save. Daytona Alcantara went 2-5 and Frank Del Valle worked 6 innings while allowing 1 ER. Peoria [...]
Iowa Everyone pretty much sucked. Smokies Jae Hoon Ha went 2-3 with 2 walks and is now hitting .278. Logan Watkins 2-4 with a pair of walks as well. Eric Joksich went 7 IP allowing 0 ER and striking out 1 batter. Daytona Austin Kirk had a nice start striking out 7 in 6 IP. [...]
The other day in San Francisco Starlin Castro lost track of the number of outs and failed to complete the second half of what may or may not have been a double play. As you'd expect, Dale Sveum was quite unhappy about it. "It's something that's obviously unacceptable at any time," Sveum said. "Whether we [...]
Chicago Cubs starters pitched poorly in their last visit to Minneapolis, but chances are they could fare better in the franchise's first visit to pitcher-friendly Target Field.
The Cubs will make their first trip to the Minnesota Twins' current home Friday night in the opener of a three-game series between two of baseball's worst teams.

I don't have much time today, so this will be a short preview. The Brewers are in bad shape, with several players (Chris Narveson, Mat Gamel, Marco Estrada, Alex Gonzalez, various catchers) out, Aramis Ramirez and Ryan Braun banged up, and others (Weeks) underperforming. The Cubs might be looking ahead to their next series with [...]
A confusing weekend which featured of lineups filled with AAAA players and a series loss to the Pirates is thankfully past, and an after a home off day the Brewers are hopefully refreshed. Tonight at 7:10 CT, the Chicago Cubs will take their first cuts at Miller Park in 2012. The Cubs are coming off a 1–2 series loss to the Giants, and currently sport an MLB-worst record of 18–36...
Norichika Aoki homered twice, including off Casey Coleman to lead off the 10th inning to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday.
The former Japanese batting champion entered the game with one homer, an inside-the-park homer on April 20.
Aoki was mobbed by his teammates at home plate.
Corey Hart hit a game-tying RBI double in the eighth for the...
Missouri State pitcher Pierce Johnson was unsure what to expect during the first night of the MLB Draft. Nervously following along, Johnson was thrilled when his name was called by the Chicago Cubs. He has high hopes for a successful major-league career.
