In a game of squandered opportunities Sean O'Sullivan and the Padres didn't waste as many openings as their visitors. They also didn't create as many which should have proved enough for the Reds in a low-scoring affair. Then in one swing that all went out the door. Pinch-hitting in the bottom of the ninth Chris Denorfia launched a first-pitch 98-mph heater from Cincinnati closer Aroldis Chapman over the centerfield fence for a 2-1 Padres victory Monday at Petco Park. The two-run shot was Denorfia's first career walk-off homer. "Eighty percent of the time" said Bud Black "you know the sound of a home run. That sounded great off the bat." The Padres manager said that before the game he and Denorfia had discussed just such a scenario. "I told him to be ready for the guy at the end" Black said. Denorfia apparently had steeled himself accordingly. All nine of his long balls this season have come against left-handed pitchers. "Bud...

Haikuarrhea: Week 17 in Padres Baseball

In an effort to stay close to our roots, the staff at Padres Public, will offer-up a haiku each Monday to describe the previous week in Padres Baseball. Restricting our feelings to 3 lines and 17 syllables to describe a week of play is a massive undertaking, but (un) fortunately, we are more than up to the task. The Padres went 5 and 2 this week and things seem to be finally clicking...

Latos can't stop Reds' losing streak

Mat Latos couldn't play stopper for Cincinnati, and then struggled to describe the funk the Reds are in. Nick Hundley hit a two-run double with two outs in the eighth inning and the San Diego Padres beat Cincinnati 4-2 Tuesday night, handing the Reds their fifth straight loss. Latos faced his former team for the second time since he was dealt from San Diego in a five-player trade...

Daily Friar 7.29.13

I’m back now from a very busy weekend. I hope that you all enjoyed the weekend as our Padres took on the Diamondbacks in what proved to be a very good series for them. I want to thank Alex Bartlett for taking over for me while I was spending time with my family. So here we are, Monday again and the Padres actually had a good road trip. Overall they went 6-4 over the ten game span...

Sox Looking Into SD Reliever Luke Gregerson

Luke, Can You Travel Farther? (Getty Images)The Red Sox have been scouring the reliever market for several days now. According to the Globe's Nick Cafardo, Boston's latest target may be San Diego RHP Luke Gregerson. The 29-year old Gregerson has been good this year—posting a 2.91 ERA in 43 1/3 innings of work for the Padres. Batters are hitting just .217 off him this year...

Padres Close to Acquiring SP Ian Kennedy from the Diamondbacks

Multiple sources are reporting that the Padres are close to acquiring starting pitcher Ian Kennedy, from the Diamondbacks in exchange for lefty specialist Joe Thatcher and prospects. The Padres have been searching for starting pitching and it appears they have found a new piece to add to the rotation in the form of Ian Kennedy.  Kennedy has struggled since winning 21 games in 2011...

Latos to face Volques in homecoming

Save the game, not the cigar. (AP Photo/Lenny Ignelzi) The Padres handed the Reds their fourth loss in a row last night. This west coast visit started out so promising, but last night’s loss pulled the winning percentage for the road trip under the .500 mark. I didn’t stay up for it myself, so I didn’t know that it was Chris “The Heartthrob” Denorfia that pounded the last...

Padres 4, Reds 2

Nick Hundley hit a two-run double with two outs in the eighth inning and the San Diego Padres beat Cincinnati 4-2 Tuesday night, handing the Reds their fifth straight loss. Will Venable, who scored the go-ahead run on Hundleys' hit, went 3 for 3 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Venable singled to right with one out in the eighth against Manny Parra (1-2). Sam LeCure came...

Ian Kennedy to Padres, A Win-Win Agreement

Sitting eight games below .500 and five behind trading partner, Arizona, the San Diego Padres added an arm to their rotation. Ian Kennedy, a former 21-game-winner and before that, a Yankee prospect, now stands with an ugly 3-8 record and 5.23 ERA. He seems to have overstayed his welcome in Arizona, but the Padres will now take a shot on the righty who hails from Southern California...

Brandon Phillips homered and Joey Votto hit a two-run double for the Reds, who avoided a three-game sweep and ended San Diego's four-game winning streak. Bailey had allowed just five singles going...

Daily Friar 7.30.13

Well how about that for a win? The Padres were coming off a 1-0 win in Arizona against Patrick Corbin. This was somewhat unexpected since Corbin had won twelve games going into that game. So really the low scoring affair was no surprise. Then last night came a game against the Reds, one of the highest scoring teams in the MLB. So when the Padres held the Reds to one run the entire...
