Chris Denorfia hit a two-run, pinch-hit homer off Aroldis Chapman in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the San Diego Padres a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night.
Chapman (3-4) walked leadoff batter Yonder Alonso on a 3-2 pitch, then Denorfia drove a 98 mph first-pitch offering from Chapman over the center-field fence 423 feet away to deal the Reds their fourth straight loss.
Luke Gregerson (5-5) pitched the ninth for the win.
Mike Leake and Sean O'Sullivan, two San Diego natives, matched up against each other. Leake went seven scoreless innings, allowing four singles.
O'Sullivan, making his third start for the season for the Padres, went six innings and allowed one run on five hits. He walked five and struck out one.
Reds center fielder Derrick Robinson led off the fifth with a triple off the fence in left-center. He scored when Cesar Izturis hit a grounder to first, which Alonso grabbed, touched first base for the putout then fired home, but Robi...

Okay, this may wind up being a bit of a rant. Hang with me. There will be a point.
I haven’t written a piece for Friarhood in a long time. In fact, I just recently got a text from Steve. It simply said: “Writer’s block?” I didn’t even respond to that.
So, the question I asked myself is why? Why haven’t I written anything in so long? Why didn’t I text Steve back? Sure...
The San Diego Padres have recalled right-handed reliever Miles Mikolas from Triple-A Tucson and placed right-handed starter Sean O'Sullivan on paternity leave.
Mikolas was called up Tuesday for the fourth time this season. He's made one appearance this year, pitching a scoreless ninth inning at home against San Francisco on July 11. In 44 games at Tucson, he is 3-1 with...
There may be no more magical time for a baseball fan than the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline. It’s like Christmas morning without the religion or messy package cleanup – it’s a holiday for everyone! Whether your team is at the top, the bottom, or languishing somewhere in the middle there’s a reasonable chance you’ll get to take part in the excitement come July 31st...
While the San Diego Padres are among the teams not expected to make a significant trade between now and Wednesday's deadline, they are focused on dealing relievers, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.
#Padres big-picture ideas haven't materialized. Focus now more on bullpen pieces (Gregerson & Thatcher, to name two).

Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after a night in the pub. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking.
“Sometimes you eat the Norf. And sometimes the Norf eats you.” ~ Sam Elliot (The Big Lebowski)
Last night, everyone in San Diego echoed that same sentiment. The series opener moved along at a leisurely pace until the ninth inning when...
July 31 is a magical day for Major League Baseball as teams scramble to try and find the right pieces to their roster puzzle ahead of the non-waiver trade deadline. Calls and text messages run wild as front office personnel entertain a flurry of possibilities before the clock strikes midnight on the ability to deal freely. There are buyers and there are sellers, untouchable prospects...
Crazy busy day today bat the ol’ J-O-B but I wanted to touch base with you all, albeit quickly. So long story short, here’s my five good things from the former” house of horrors” and now current ‘home sweet, home”, Chase Field.
5. Andrew Cashner
Cashner got into a world of trouble again in the first inning of Saturday’s game loading the bases with only one out before...
Mat Latos couldn't play stopper for Cincinnati, and then struggled to describe the funk the Reds are in.
Nick Hundley hit a two-run double with two outs in the eighth inning and the San Diego Padres beat Cincinnati 4-2 Tuesday night, handing the Reds their fifth straight loss.
Latos faced his former team for the second time since he was dealt from San Diego in a five-player trade...
“If you’re keeping score Venable will hit in the eighth spot in the batting order …. no that can’t be right.”
In the seventh inning of Saturday’s game against Arizona, with the Padres comfortably ahead 9-3, manager Buddy Black made a number of substitutions. Will Venable entered the game to play center. Chris Denorfia moved from center to right. Tim Stauffer came...
I’m back now from a very busy weekend. I hope that you all enjoyed the weekend as our Padres took on the Diamondbacks in what proved to be a very good series for them. I want to thank Alex Bartlett for taking over for me while I was spending time with my family. So here we are, Monday again and the Padres actually had a good road trip. Overall they went 6-4 over the ten game span...
Tyson Ross outpitched All-Star Patrick Corbin with eight dominant innings and the San Diego Padres closed out their first winning road trip of the season with a 1-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.
Carlos Quentin had a run-scoring single in the first inning off Corbin (12-2) and Ross (2-4) took it from there, allowing three hits and striking out seven in the combined...

A national writer says it is too early to give up on Billy Hamilton and other notes.
It’s not Reds-related or even NLC-related, but Chad Qualls’ stumble after a fist pump last night makes me snort ever time I see it.
Dusty Baker hasn’t given a single word of disapproval so far. Just goes to show that if Aroldis Chapman had just pumped his fist first, then those forward rolls wouldn’t have gotten him in any trouble.
