During the off-season before the 2009 season it was rumored that the Mets came very close to signing Derek Lowe only to have the Braves swoop in and grab the veteran pitcher.  The made a low ball offer that they sat on saying they wouldn't bid against themselves, the Braves missed several pitchers and were able to become the highest bidder. Now most believed that the Braves over paid and Lowe under preformed but Lowe made 101 starts in three season, logging 575 innings and in the first two seasons he one 31 games.  During those same seasons the Mets would have killed for that type of consistency from a 3-4 starter. After 3 1/2 seasons with an ERA over three Lowe had a resurgence with the Yankees, producing an ERA of 3.04 in 17 games in which 7 were starts.  In all, Lowe has 175 wins and 86 saves in his career.He's been holding out this off-season for a chance to start but as spring approaches he may have to get in camp on just a chance to pitch.  Lowe could end up auditioning for a longman role with a club who could see him as a back-up plan in the late innings...Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe speculates that the Mets could be a fit for Lowe. Lowe wants to be a starting pitcher, but it increasingly appears that he will have to go back to being a swingman, which is how he started his career with the Red Sox.
