The St. Louis Cardinals returned from the All-Star break in third place in the NL Central, 2.5 games behind the Pittsburgh Pirates, and they had an opportunity to quickly jump back ahead with their first nine games after the break against division teams. Photo by Chris Reed Unfortunately, the Cardinals won just two of the first seven of those games heading into play Saturday. They were unceremoniously swept by the Cincinnati Reds and lost two of three to the Milwaukee Brewers before beating the Chicago Cubs 4-1 Friday. That stretch dropped them five games behind the division-leading Reds. It would be easy to sound the alarms and demand an overhaul at the trade deadline. People say the bullpen is terrible, Jon Jay can no longer hit and the team could use another starting pitcher. However, those problems need only minor solutions, not major changes. It would be short-sighted to say the Cardinals are a bad team. This team still has as much talent on its roster as any team in the Nation...

How much will it take for the Cardinals to keep Wainwright?

There are at least two other pitchers that had to wake up happy on Wednesday morning over the new six-year, $144 million offer that Cole Hamels has accepted from the Philadelphia Phillies. One is Zack Greinke of the Brewers, who becomes the top free agent target to hit the market this fall. The other is St. Louis Cardinal Adam Wainwright. Though the 30-year-old (he turns 31 on...

Carpenter remains optimistic following surgery

ST. LOUIS Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter is no stranger to surgeries, undergoing numerous procedures on his right elbow and shoulder during his career. But last week's surgery in Dallas was the most unique one yet. And for the 37-year-old Carpenter, hopefully his final one. "This is about it," Carpenter said Tuesday. "If this doesn't work, unfortunately...

Cardinals add Fuentes to big league roster

Courtesy: Cardinals Media Relations ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Cardinals announced they have purchased four-time All-Star reliever Brian Fuentes from Springfield (AA) and have optioned pitcher Victor Marte to Memphis (AAA). To make room for Fuentes addition to the clubs 40-man Major League roster, the Cardinals have designated pitcher Chuckie Fick for assignment. Fuentes, 36, worked...

Cardinals call up lefty Brian Fuentes

Ten days after signing lefty Brian Fuentes to a minor league contract, the St. Louis Cardinals have added him to the major league roster. The Cardinals purchased the contract of the 36-year-old Fuentes from Double-A Springfield in time for Wednesday night's game against the Dodgers. Fuentes has 224 career saves to lead active left-handers. He led the majors with 48 saves in...

Fuentes placed on restricted list

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed relief pitcher Brian Fuentes on the restricted list after the left-hander told the team he needed time off due to personal reasons. They're on the verge of getting left-handed starter Jaime Garcia back. General manager John Mozeliak said Tuesday that the team did not expect Fuentes back this season, adding ''I didn't close the...

The Lance Berkman Situation

If Lance Berkman’s 2011 was a career zenith, (great numbers, clutch post-season, World Series win, defying everyone who thought he was done and the Cardinals 1y for 8M contract was stupid, etc al) then 2012 might just be his nadir. Berkman decided early in the off-season that he wanted to re-run it for 2012. And the Cardinals rewarded him with 12M to do so. Many in Cardinal Nation...

Berkman removed after being hit by pitch

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Lance Berkman of the St. Louis Cardinals was taken out for a pinch runner not long after getting hit by a pitch on his surgically-repaired right knee in the third inning. Trainers attended to Berkman after he was struck by a breaking ball from the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw to lead off the inning. Berkman took his base but only trotted to second when Daniel...

GIFcap: Matt Holliday runs into wall on home run ball, said ball then hits him in the head

An appropriate face by Matt Holliday for an appropriate fail. It would have been better if he actually face-planted, but the ball hitting him in the head after the fact is a nice consolation

Furcal plays hero for Cardinals

Rafael Furcal singled home the winning run with two outs in the 12th inning and the St. Louis Cardinals dampened the Dodgers debut of Hanley Ramirez, beating Los Angeles 3-2 Wednesday night. Ramirez tripled on the first pitch he saw with his new team. The three-time All-Star infielder, acquired late Tuesday night from Miami, went 2 for 4 with a walk. He scored once and hit an RBI...

Kelly frustrated as Cardinals lose to Dodgers

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Joe Kelly grew up in Southern California rooting for the Angels and hating the Los Angeles Dodgers. Losing to them hurt that much more. "My family hated them. They still do," Kelly said after the St. Louis Cardinals' 5-3 loss on Monday night. "I put too much pressure on myself out there. "Maybe it got to me." Kelly (1-3), a rookie...

Cardinals still can't beat Dodgers

The last time the Los Angeles Dodgers were in town, late last August, they swept the Cardinals in a three-game series that dropped the Cardinals 10 games out of the division lead and 10 12 games out of the wild-card race. The Cardinals then rallied to win the wild card, the pennant and the World Series. The situation isn't as dire this time, but the Dodgers beat the Cardinals...

Wainwright's bat sparks Cardinals offense

ST. LOUIS Stuck in a month-long rut at the plate, the slumping St. Louis Cardinals turned to an unlikely candidate to get things going offensively: Adam Wainwright. Usually known for the abilities of his powerful right arm, the pitcher provided an RBI-double, scored the tying run and walked with the bases loaded all off Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw to help lead the Cardinals to...

Cards not profiting from solid starting pitching

ST. LOUIS If the St. Louis Cardinals miss out on the playoffs and look back later at where things might have gone wrong, not taking advantage of some stellar starting pitching the past month may be near the top of the list. The Cardinals got another quality start from rookie Joe Kelly Monday, his sixth straight quality outing and the seventh straight such start from the team. But...

Fucal, Cards spoil Ramirez's debut in walkoff

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Rafael Furcal singled home the winning run with two outs in the 12th inning and the St. Louis Cardinals dampened the Dodgers debut of Hanley Ramirez, beating Los Angeles 3-2 Wednesday night.
