There may be only one thing that could prevent left-hander Matt Harrison from making his first All-Star team.

That would be Harrison himself.

On Sunday, Harrison demonstrated just how fragile his All-Star bid could be by pitching five shutout innings in Texas' 4-2 win over Colorado and then leaving with a slightly stiff back.

The five innings put him in position to tie David Price for the AL's lead in victories with 10 and establish the longest winning streak (six games) by an AL starter this year. The five shutout innings lowered his June ERA, which was already the best in the AL, to 1.06.

Having already lost right-handers Neftali Feliz, Derek Holland and Alexi Ogando to disabling injuries, manager Ron Washington was not taking chances. Despite protestations from Harrison, Washington opted to sit him down for the rest of the game.

"If he goes out there and throws a pitch and something happens after we'd all known he was a little stiff," Washington said, "well, we just couldn't do that."

After the game, Washington said Harrison would definitely make his next scheduled start, Friday against Oakland. And the manager added Harrison will be considered for the All-Star team even if he doesn't finish as one of the top five vote-getters among players and coaches in balloting that ended over the weekend. Washington, the AL manager, will be able to pick up to eight players to round out the team.

"He's going to get a lot of consideration," Washington said. "He just needs to concentrate on his next start. He does that, the All-Star Game will take care of itself. How are you not going to consider Matt Harrison right now?"
