In fairness to the Detroit Free Press, the late Ernie Harwell is recognized by many around Detroit as the best baseball play-by-play announcer that ever lived.  But in fairness to VIN Scully, the Detroit Free Press needs to get its collective head out of the sand.  VIN Scully is as fine a broadcaster as there has ever been in any sport (absolutely no disrespect to Ernie Harwell whom I grew up listening to every night in bed).

VIN Scully, 84, made national news this past weekend by announcing that he will be returning to the Los Angeles Dodgers booth to call their games for his 64th year in broadcasting.  Just to show you how renowned VIN Scully is, his game-calling career began in 1950 with the Brooklyn Dodgers.  He as called 25 no-hitters, three perfect games, 12 All-Star Games and 25 World Series.  His 63 seasons with the Dodgers (1950 – present) is the longest tenure of any broadcaster with a single team in professional sports history.  And, he’s so smart, he knows the meaning of “Uggla”, the last name of Atlanta Braves’ second baseman Dan.

Scully said that the Dodgers recent moves by the new ownership (Guggenheim Baseball Management group, featuring Magic Johnson) to acquire Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett and Carl Crawford from the Red Sox rejuvenated him enough to come back.

And yes, Scully is known by anyone and everyone who knows baseball by VIN Scully.
