Torii Hunter, as speculated in this article yesterday, has officially signed a 2-year, $26 million contract with the Detroit Tigers. He got a bit more money that the speculated 2-year, $20M deal that was floated out there but the Tigers feel like they got their man. Torii Hunter is pumped to be a Detroit Tiger Hunter will bat 2nd and play right field for Jim Leyland in 2013 and ’14. The contract is pending the formality of a physical. Consider it a done deal. The new Tigers lineup for 2013 should look like this: Jackson – CF Hunter – RF Cabrera – 3B Fielder – 1B Martinez – DH Dirks – LF Peralta – SS Avila – C Infante – 2B If Peralta and Avila can improve on their down 2012 seasons this will be one of the elite lineups in all of baseball. And if they don’t, that top 5 is still as deadly as it gets. Hunter, 37, will turn 38 in July. He hit a career-high .313 in 2012 while playing with the Angels. He also belted 16 homers and drove in 92 runs. The short-term deal will allow him to serve as the perfect bridge for up and comers Avisail Garcia and Nick Castellanos. In Hunter, the Tigers get a true professional, who is desperate to win a ring, and they didn’t sacrifice the farm system to fill their need. Job well done.
