PLAYERS: Anibal Sanchez
TEAMS: Detroit Tigers
I was recently asked on Jack Ebling’s radio show a hypothetical that if the Detroit Tigers had already burned Max Scherzer and needed a starter for a playoff game 7; who should Jim Leyland use? I instantly answered “Sanchez”, as in Detroit’s clear cut #2, Anibal Sanchez. Both Jack and his co-host were surprised that I didn’t answer Justin Verlander, despite his struggles of late, which continued by way of an Oakland A’s ambush on Tuesday night. Justin Verlander is searching for answers The loss dropped JV’s record to 12-10 and nudged his wayward ERA up to 3.73. Things haven’t improved a whole lot of late as his August ERA wrapped up with a very un-MVP-like 4.11. His current WHIP of 1.36 would be the 2nd highest of his career if it holds up, his highest since 2008. Verlander’s 65 walks are already more than he had in both 2011 (57) and 2012 (60), respectively, and he has a month to go. Verlander’s 10 losses mark just the 2nd time he has lost double digit games in a season in his care...

Miguel Cabrera’s reign of terror

Remember last year when Miguel Cabrera won a Triple Crown and the MVP even though Mike Trout was probably the more valuable player? Well, don’t look now, but Miguel Cabrera looks poised to win this year’s MVP going away and possibly win a second straight Triple Crown even though, in some regards, Fat Mike Trout has sophomore slumped his way to an even better season than last...

Game 2013.134: A’s at Tigers

77-56, 1st place, 5.5 games ahead of the Indians. So this is what it’s like to be an Astros fan. Oh, right. The above. Strike that remark. But losing 14-4 will correct your Pythagorean record in a hurry. The pitching has gotten a bit soggy lately, eh? The A’s are also swinging the bats very, very well. The Tigers have run into them at the wrong time. Seems to happen with some...

Tigers avoid sweep with Hunter walk-off

DETROIT (AP) -- Torii Hunter hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning, lifting Detroit over the Oakland Athletics 7-6 Thursday and saving the Tigers after Max Scherzer was denied his 20th win and Miguel Cabrera limped off with an injury. The Tigers scored four times in the ninth off Grant Balfour (0-3). A two-out walk set up Victor Martinez' RBI single, then Hunter...

Tigers' Alex Avila returns from DL, goes hitless

Alex Avila was hitless in his rain-shortened return from the disabled list last night.  The Detroit Tigers fell to the Oakland A's in five innings.  The A's managed to score one run in the top of the sixth before the rain really shut things down.  Avila didn't get much of an opportunity to prove he was back to 100 percent.  Of course, with MLB's concussion policy...

Justin Verlander’s Declining Skills

Alright, I think it’s finally time to address what might possibly be the biggest elephant in the room during the 2013 season — what the heck is going on with Justin Verlander? And not only that, but is this the end of his reign as an elite starting pitcher? With six years and $160 million left on his new contract, Tigers management and fans definitely don’t want to start having...

Torii Hunter delivers three-run, walk-off homer as Tigers top A's 7-6

You left early? Shouldn’t have. What looked like it could be the Tigers’ worst day of the season ended up as possibly their best. Thanks to three major reversals: 1) Exiting the game limping Miguel Cabrera looked like he was hurt in the fifth but wasn’t. After the Tigers’ dramatic 7-6 victory on Thursday over the Oakland Athletics a game that was won on Torii Hunter...

8/29 Recap: Indians - Braves

Scoreboard Watch: The Tigers got things overwith early today, finally beating the Athletics 7-6 after losing the first three games of the series. The walk-off win was not all good news for Detroit, who lost Miguel Cabrera again during the game. He left after being thrown out trying to leg out a double, then was pulled from the game. This could be huge news for the Indians who go...

Game 2013.133: A’s at Tigers

77-55, first place, 5.5 up on the Cleveland Indians. Rain put a merciful end to the debacle of the 6-3 loss to the A’s. It was a forgettable game, but I remember a few things: A. Prince Fielder’s 2-run, bases-loaded single to tie the game wasn’t just a 2-run, bases-loaded single to tie the game. It was also a fine display of “old style” Prince at the dish, the whole at...

A's get rain-shortened 6-3 win over Tigers

DETROIT (AP) -- Brandon Moss hit a tiebreaking two-run homer off Justin Verlander, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Detroit Tigers 6-3 in a game cut short by rain on Tuesday night. Seth Smith hit a leadoff homer in the sixth, and Oakland had the bases loaded with no one out when the tarp was pulled on the field due to the weather. It was called after an 80-minute delay. Oakland...

Brandon Moss, Relentless A’s Offense Pummel Tigers 14-4

Wednesday night’s 14-4 win by the Oakland A’s over the Detroit Tigers was notable for two key factors: the unrelenting attack of the A’s offense and Brett Anderson’s return from the 60-day disabled list. Anderson ended up with a three-inning save, the first of his career (even though in this case the ‘save’ designation is really meant more in terms of preventing the bullpen...

Torii Hunter gets bubble gum bath after walk off

Pie's messy and, I agree, the water/gatorade bath is better used on the reporter. Dumping a bucket of gum balls on the walk off hero seems original enough. Video: Hunter gets bubble gum bath, reporter gets drenched Do you have anymore gum?

Is 'more' too much for Verlander?

Justin Verlander -- author of two no-hitters, winner of a Most Valuable Player award -- is used to making history. Not this kind.

The A’s are really on top of things

From John Hickey’s game recap of Wednesday’s curbstomping of the Tigers: [Dan] Straily, who had been consistently betrayed by the Oakland offense since the All-Star break, had so many runs scored that he almost blinked and missed some. “This is going to sound strange, but when I gave up that (third-inning) homer to Torii Hunter, I thought it was a 1-0 game,” Straily said...

Oakland A's unleash 21-hit attack and wallop Tigers 14-4

The thought was that if one team outscored the other 28-13 in the first three games of this four-game series it would be the Detroit Tigers putting the hurt on the slumping A's. It hasn't worked out that way. A's hitters beat up 11-game winner Doug Fister for 13 hits and seven runs in five innings Wednesday night en route to a 14-4 blowout win that has the A's on...

Cabrera hurt again, day-to-day

Detroit Tigers superstar Miguel Cabrera left Thursday's game after hurting his abdomen while making an awkward slide trying to stretch a single into a double. The reigning Triple Crown winner limped off the field in the fifth inning against Oakland. He was listed as day to day with discomfort. Cabrera has been hobbled this month with a strain in his groin, abdominal and hip...
