LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) -- Justin Verlander overcame a rocky first and pitched six solid innings in his next-to-last start of spring training Sunday as the Tigers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3 in a split-squad game. The 2011 AL Cy Young winner and MVP, allowed four hits -- and two runs -- to the first five Phillies, then retired 15 of the next 18 batters, allowing just three infield singles after the first inning. For the day, Verlander gave up seven hits and two runs with three strikeouts and no walks. Hunter Pence singled home a run for the Phillies in the first, then scored on an RBI double by Ty Wigginton. Scott Elarton, who hasn't pitched in the majors since 2008 and was out of baseball completely in 2011, started for the Phillies allowing two hits and one run in four innings. Elarton, a non-roster invitee, is competing for a spot in the Phillies' bullpen.

2012 burning question: Detroit Tigers

From my season preview of the Tigers on Wednesday... Burning QuestionIs Detroit's offense going to be the best in the American League this year? Let's look at this question statistically. The Tigers return most of their offense, but have a couple of change. Victor Martinez will miss the season, and will (essentially) be replaced by Prince Fielder. Brandon Inge isn't...

Bar ordered to stop selling 'Leyland smoking' t-shirts

Jim Leyland's style and personality seems to fit the city of Detroit quite well. Some people love Leyland for bringing the Detroit Tigers from the abyss into one of the top teams in the American League. The Dirty Trick bar in Detroit also thinks so highly of Leyland that they've started selling a t-shirt of Leyland's mug with a cigarette dangling out the side of his...

Tigers option Turner to Triple-A

The Detroit Tigers have optioned right-hander Jacob Turner to Triple-A Toledo, one of six roster cuts Monday. Detroit also reassigned right-hander Chris Bootcheck to minor league camp, along with infielders Audy Ciriaco, Argenis Diaz and Ryan Strieby and outfielder Quintin Berry. Tigers manager Jim Leyland has said he'll put Cabrera back in the...

Spring Training Box Scores

The Tigers’ 14-4 spring training record is one of the best in the majors, and one of the best in recent Tigers history. They haven’t lost back to back games all spring. Largely inconsequential, yes; but it’s better than 4-14. Spring Training stats are generally poor performance predictors, but let’s see if a deeper look can reveal anything. Ryan Raburn is pacing the Majors...

Chef Rob’s Dish of the Day: The Ultimate Tiger Killer – Brandon Inge

Over my, now nearly, 27 years on this planet it seems as though I have heard every cliché in the sports book. I know that the season is a marathon and not a sprint and I’ve heard all about how we lost this game as a team. My absolute favorite is how that one player on the opposing team is the proverbial “Tiger Killer”. Jim Thome has held this distinction for a number of years...

Fifth Spot Candidates: Down to Three

What began as five pontential candidates for the Detroit Tigers’ fifth spot, has dwelded down to three. With less than two weeks left of Spring Training, manager, Jim Leyland isn’t saying who is favored to take the role of fifth starter. One thing we do know is who is still in the running: Drew Smyly, Andy Oliver, and Duane Below. Andy Oliver: Oliver came out of the gate strong...

Smoking Jimmy T-shirt sales will be halted

Jim Leyland is never one without his cigarettes, well that was until Wayne County banned smoking indoors, which included his office and the Detroit Tiger’s clubhouse.   A local bar in Detroit honored the grizzly-voiced manager and his passion for cancer sticks with this awesome T-shirt The Dirty Trick began selling this fascinating T just yesterday for 22 bucks a pop, but...

Spring Training: The Phils are done in by a three-run home run as they lose to the Tigers, 6-3.

A three-run home run do in the Phils as they lose to the Tigers, 6-3.
