Arizona reliever J.J. Putz has been diagnosed with a sprained ligament, a strained flexor pronator and nerve irritation in his right elbow. All of Putz’s ailments can be addressed though rehab meaning that the pitcher will not need major surgery on his right elbow.
Putz will attempt to work his way back before the end of the 2013 season.
Heath Bell has assumed the closers role for the Diamondbacks.
In 14 games this season Putz has a 4.26 ERA and 5 saves. Over the past two seasons Putz recorded 77 saves for the Diamondbacks while being one of the leagues better closers. Putz has a history of discomfort in his right elbow but all signs point to him avoiding a major surgery.
