Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic says the Diamondbacks acquisition of Trevor Cahill and Craig Breslow could lead to them trading Joe Saunders, and the Red Sox are one of several teams to express interest in Saunders this winter.
Earlier this week, Piecoro said the Diamondbacks offered Saunders a new two-year contract, and rather than non-tendering Saunders, GM Kevin Towers recently said they intend to either sign Saunders or trade him.
Last month, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe said the Diamondbacks might decide to non-tender Saunders this winter.
Michael Baron (Posted Dec, 9, 2011): Saunders isn’t going to “wow” anyone with his stuff, but he’s proven to be a durable and steady left handed pitcher who could be a fit. He usually sits in the upper 80s to low 90s with his fastball and off-sets that with a good tailing change-up. On Friday, the Diamondbacks traded a prized arm in their minor league system, right-hander Jarrod Parker, to the Oakland Athletics as part of a package that fills two areas of concern. Trevor Cahill, an...
As expected, the Arizona Diamondbacks did not make a lot of noise in the winter meetings, but they did get a pitcher in the Rule 5 draft and lay the groundwork for the resolution of the Lyle Overbay and Joe Saunders situations.
