Diamondbacks promote Tyler Gilbert, send down Kyler Lewis
Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

After sending reliever Drey Jameson to the 60-day IL due to right elbow inflammation, the Arizona Diamondbacks have elected to promote Tyler Gilbert from Triple-A Reno.

This will be Tyler Gilbert’s first rodeo with the Diamondbacks this season, as he has spent all year with the Reno Aces. Through 21 appearances, the 29-year-old has posted a 5.67 ERA, struck out 65 batters, and walked just 19.

However, Gilbert does have prior experience with the Diamondbacks, as he spent a brief part of his summer last year in the majors. As a starting pitcher, Gilbert showed signs of promise. but, ended up falling into a slump, causing his record to slip to 0-3 and his ERA to soar to 5.24.

It is likely that Gilbert will stick around in the bullpen this time around, as the Diamondbacks are in desperate need of relievers.

On the other hand, Kyle Lewis will head back down to Triple-A after a short stint with the D-backs. Lewis, since being called up just one week ago, has seen his batting average fall to .182 in his first season in Arizona.

Since being crowned Rookie of the Year in the shortened COVID season, Lewis has not quite been the same at the plate. In the three seasons following his ROY campaign, the former 1st round pick has seen very minimal playing time, spending the majority of his days in the minors.
