Updates with details and quotes. The Arizona Diamondbacks placed outfielder Chris Young and infielder Geoff Blum on the 15-day disabled list before Wednesday's game against Pittsburgh and brought up outfielder A.J. Pollock and infielder Cody Ransom. Young, an NL All-Star in 2010, injured his right shoulder crashing into the padded wall in center for a catch in the fourth inning Tuesday. An MRI confirmed he had a bruised right shoulder. Young is hitting .410 (16 for 39) with five homers and 13 RBIs. Arizona right fielder Justin Upton missed Tuesday's game because of a sore left thumb and wasn't in the starting lineup Wednesday. ''Give him a day or so, see if we see any improvement at all,'' Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. Blum went on the disabled list retroactive to Tuesday with a strained left oblique. He spent much of last season on the DL with right knee inflammation and a broken right little finger. Pollock was in Wednesday's starting lineup batting seventh. He was hitting .340 at Triple-A Reno and Ransom .294.

With Young out, D-backs plan to regroup

PHOENIX -Now that Chris Young has been placed on the disabled list, Plan B has become Plan A. Not that the Diamondbacks are sweating it. They will miss Young, whose numbers litter the NL leader board and whose defense is so voracious that it occasionally takes a bite out of him, too. But they have done without before. After shortstop Stephen Drew went down last July 20, the D...

D-backs' Young 'not missing' amid red-hot start

PHOENIX -- Chris Young did not go into the offseason trying to make himself a different player. He is who he is. The subtle changes the Diamondbacks center fielder made over the winter have made him a more comfortable hitter, and his early success stands as testament. But the mechanical changes explain only part of it, Young said after hitting his fifth home run of the season in...

Life is about to get tougher for the Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks were my pick to win the NL West before this season, and I'd say about 55% of people had the same general opinion as me. They're off to a 7-5 start right now, second in the division, but their season is going to get a lot more interesting in the next month or so. Yesterday, the Diamondbacks placed center fielder Chris Young on the DL with a slight...

A.J. Pollock Benefits from Chris Young Injury

The Arizona Diamondbacks have gone fishing for a replacement for injured outfielder Chris Young. The organization purchased the contract of prospect A.J. Pollock from triple-A. Prior to the 2012 season the outfielder ranked as the 13th best player in the minor league system, which has one of the strongest collection of prospects in the game. He was the club’s first round pick...

Pittsburgh Pirate Parrot Costume Update

The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 in front of yours truly and 19,197 other people on Tuesday night at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. The win improved the Pirates to 4-7 and moved their magic number to 77 games in pursuit of achieving my lofty preseason expectations of the Bucs- a non losing season after 19 consecutive...

Arizona Outfield Is Ailing

Many questioned the Arizona Diamondbacks' acquisition of Jason Kubel this winter, but the added outfield depth is key now that star outfielders Chris Young and Justin Upton are both missing time due to injury. Top prospect A.J. Pollock is also being counted on to help with the outfield situation.
