Diamondbacks Select Kevin Newman Amid Geraldo Perdomo’s Injury
Katie Stratman-USA TODAY Sports

With Geraldo Perdomo headed to the IL, the Diamondbacks have selected Kevin Newman’s contract from Triple-A Reno.

Newman was signed to a minor league contract on January 4th, but he struggled during spring training, posting a .194 batting average.

Originally drafted out of the University of Arizona by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1st round of the 2015 draft, Newman spent the first five seasons of his career in Pittsburgh before moving to Cincinnati last year.

Newman’s best season came in 2019 when he tallied 152 hits and finished with a .800 OPS.

The 30-year-old is versatile in the infield, making him an appealing choice while Perdomo recovers from his torn meniscus.

Other shortstop options that the D-backs have available are Jace Peterson and Blaze Alexander.
