Really Tuesday night was a night like many others at Chase Field. The Diamondbacks came back from an early deficit and broke a late tie. The bullpen blew a save not once but twice. Arizona went to extra innings for the 20th time this season and won on a walkoff for the 11th time this time 10-9 on Aaron Hill’s single to left over a five-man infield in the 10th inning in front of 19807 at Chase Field. The usual. Oh and starting pitcher Ian Kennedy had a rough outing. For the other team. Kennedy traded to the Padres at the July 31 deadline and unavailable to the media until after press time couldn’t make it out of the fifth inning in his return to Chase Field giving up six earned runs on six hits and five walks. Though it seemed like eons ago by the time the game ended Kennedy’s was a familiar performance for a Chase Field crowd that had seen him struggle in a Sedona Red jersey for the first four months of the season. Kennedy entered the 2013 season as the team ace after winning a combined 36 games in the past two seasons and finished fourth in the voting for the National League Cy Young Award in 2011. “We’re certainly thankful for all of his contributions he had with this organization specifically in 2011” Diamondbacks General Manager Kevin Towers said. “We wouldn’t have made the postseason without him.” But Kennedy struggled over the course of 21 starts with the Diamondbacks this year posting a 5.23 ERA. With the trade deadline approaching and the Diamondbacks more in the mix for a playoff spot than they are now handing the ball to their struggling former ace every fifth day didn’t seem like an option. Towers felt he had an excess at starting pitcher and shipped Kennedy to a division rival. In return the Diamondbacks received a situational lefty it lacked in Joe Thatcher a possible future closer in minor-leaguer Matt Stites and a 2014 draft pick. Thatcher hasn’t fared well in a month with Arizona posting a 7.94 ERA entering Tuesday after logging a 2.10 mark with the Padres earlier in the season. Stites hasn’t pitched since the trade due to an appendectomy. Towers isn’t ready to judge the trade just yet though. “I’m just hoping Thatcher and Stites benefit our club and hopefully this player we name later that we pick up in the draft ends up being an every-day regular” Towers said. “I hope Ian has a very successful career there with the Padres.”
