The former basketball coach and long-time basketball analyst and commentator has built up a reputation as a moral torch-bearer and seems to be a go-to sports media personality during discussions regarding social and moral issues.  Recently, he inserted himself into the Ryan Braun suspension situation by penning an article showing his utter disgust for Braun’s actions.  This is where I see Vitale as misguided:  I read the article with a furrowed brow and a little bit of surprise and confusion that this self-described long-time baseball fan would still be “ill” about a situation like Braun’s.  First, the controversy regarding just performance enhancing drugs is going on at least 20 years now in baseball.  This chapter should come as no surprise.  And, second, the suspension means that, on its surface, the Major League Baseball drug testing programs are working at some level of effectiveness.  I would imagine this news would please Vitale since it’s a symptom of integrity being restored.    The following is where I see Vitale as naïve (or worse, purposefully ignorant):  “All I ask is for players to play hard, the right way, with a lot of passion and pride.
