Entering the final series of the Blue Jays’ disappointing season at the Rogers Centre the Tampa Bay Rays were in the driver’s seat of the wild-card race. There were 64 permutations and combinations involving the three remaining contenders and leading the Indians by one game and the Rangers by two the Rays simply needed to win two of three games to ensure hosting the wild-card game on Wednesday. The goal remains the same after losing the series opener 6-3 against the Jays’ ace R.A. Dickey. The knuckleballer is suspected of being able convince the proper authorities in charge of the stadium to leave the roof closed on a clear September night because that’s what he truly believes works best for him — the closed environment. He denies any involvement in the decision. “In truth I need to be able to pitch well no matter what the roof is” Dickey said. “I know that (my statistics) are better when it’s closed. It’s unfair to make a complete evaluation based on my first ...

R.A. Dickey finished a difficult and disappointing season with a win. Dickey slowed Tampa Bay's stretch run, leading the Toronto Blue Jays to a 6-3 victory Friday night that stopped the Rays' seven-game winning streak. Dickey (14-13) allowed two runs and five hits in 7 1-3 innings, retiring 13 of 14 during one stretch. The 38-year-old knuckleballer, acquired from the New...

Evaluating RA Dickey’s first season in Toronto

Toronto Blue Jays RHP RA Dickey has completed his first season as a starting pitcher in Canada. Even though he has plenty of experience pitching in the American League in his days in Texas, Minnesota and Seattle, this was his first AL season after redefining himself as a knuckleball pitcher. If the question was openly asked, “RA Dickey’s first season in Toronto, was it a success...

Ryan Goins trips, falls after rounding third base (Video)

Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Ryan Goins suffered an embarrassing moment when he tripped and fell after rounding third base during Wednesday night's game in Baltimore. It happened in the second inning with two outs and Goins on second base. Goins was running on a popup and somehow lost his footing after touching the bag at third, doing a somersault in front of the Blue...

Blue Jays' Mark Buehrle exits with calf injury

Stop me when you've heard this before. A member of the Toronto Blue Jays has sustained an injury. When it comes to the Blue Jays, even the most durable players won't go unscathed. Mark Buehrle would certainly fall into that category, but the left-hander was forced to exit last night's start early after taking a line drive off his right calf. It was Buehrle's last...

MLB Announces Tiebreaker in Case of Three-Way Tie Among Rays, Indians, Rangers for AL Wild Card

The majority of the Major League Baseball postseason is now set in stone, but three teams are still battling for the final two playoff spots in the American League. The Rays, Indians and Rangers all remain in contention for the AL’s wild card berths, and just two games separated the three teams entering Friday night. The teams wrap up their regular-season slates this Sunday, and...

Tampa Bay Rays crash Rivera’s farewell party; win seventh straight

On an emotional night in the Bronx, where fans saw Mariano Rivera’s final game at Yankee Stadium, the Rays won their seventh straight.  Alex Cobb pitched for seven innings, allowing no runs and three hits, leading his team to a 4-0 victory.  Tampa Bay is now 12-3 in their last fifteen games, and appear to be red-hot heading towards October.  They have completed sweeps of two...

The Hall of Fame case of Vladimir Guerrero

This week, TOC will be looking at five players who recently announced their retirements from the game and their potential Hall of Fame cases. Today, things get a lot more complicate, as we look at Vladimir Guerrero. In his prime, Vladimir Guerrero was one of the most electric players to watch in baseball. He could hit a pitch at his shoelaces over the fence, dump a pitch a foot...

Rays Rumors: David Price 'probably' going to be traded

This is likely David Price's last season with the Tampa Bay Rays. After drafting him with the first pick in the 2007 draft, he has been exactly what they expected. An ace, a guy capable of striking out 200+ hitters in a season and a winner. Price has gone 70-39 in his career with a 3.20 ERA and a 872/285 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Price has two years remaining on his contract,...

Rays rookies play dress-up after beating Yankees

Rookies beware. The Tampa Bay Rays held "rookie dress-up day" at Yankee Stadium after their 4-0 victory over the New York Yankees, completing a crucial sweep for the hopes of claiming an American League wild-card spot. The results of the fashion display were, well, interesting. Here's a sampling of some of the unique sights from the Rays' youngest. Wil Myers...

American League Wild Card Spots Coming Down To The Wire

The American League Wild Card spots are coming down to the wire with only 2 games remaining in the season. Currently the Tampa Bay Rays and the upbeat Cleveland Indians are tied for the 2 wild card spots with perennial playoff contender Texas Rangers a game back. If you are into betting baseball there are some meaningful games to quench your gambling thirst this weekend. The Rays...

Blue Jays triumph over Rays again, continue playoff spoiling

The way the Tampa Bay Rays have owned the Blue Jays over the past six seasons who would have guessed that Toronto would be the team to throw a wrench in their playoff plans? Since the beginning of the 2008 season until the start of this final three game series of the 2013 season the Rays had won 71 of the 96 meetings between these two AL East rivals. But never in all that time...

Rays drop into tie for wild card

The Tampa Bay Rays dropped into a tie with Texas for the second AL wild-card berth, losing to Toronto 7-2 Saturday as Ryan Goins and Kevin Pillar hit two-run home runs for the Blue Jays and J.A. Happ won for the first time in four starts. The Rays (90-71) lost their second straight following a seven-game winning streak and dropped a half-game behind Cleveland (90-70), which was...

Next week, I may have to root for the Tampa Rays

I never had use for Tampa. Took the kids to Busch Gardens once. It rained. Tampa was the place where Yankee prospects seemed to vanish in sinkholes, the city that couldn't stand a team being called the "Devil Rays" - you know, because it is a victory for Satan - which set a new record for pathetic-ness, even in Florida. And Tampa always tried to hate the Yankees, probably...
