NEW YORK (AP) -- David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays and knuckleballer R.A. Dickey of the New York Mets won baseball's Cy Young awards on Wednesday. Price barely beat out 2011 winner Justin Verlander for the American League prize in one of the closest votes ever. Dickey was an easy choice for the NL honor in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. The 38-year-old Dickey became the first pitcher who relied predominantly on a knuckleball to win the Cy Young Award, an achievement mentors such as Hall of Famer Phil Niekro are quite proud of. Runner-up two years ago in the Cy Young race, Price was the pick this time for the AL's top pitching prize. He received 14 of 28 first-place votes to edge Verlander, chosen first on 13 ballots. Other than a 1969 tie between Mike Cuellar and Denny McLain, it was the tightest race in the history of the AL award. Rays closer Fernando Rodney got the other first-place vote and came in fifth. Price went 20-5 to tie Jered...

It’s Dickey! Mets Knuckleballer Wins Cy Young!

Congratulations to R.A. Dickey who was just named the winner on the 2012 Cy Young Award! Dickey received 27 of 32 first place votes from the Baseball Writers Association of America. Dickey now joins Tom Seaver (1969, 1973, 1975) and Dwight Gooden (1985) as the only Mets ever to have won the award. The Mets ace led the NL in both complete games and shutouts, and led the majors with...

From Left Field: Only 3 Teams Have Traded A Reigning Cy Young Winner

Now that it’s official that R.A. Dickey has won the NL Cy Young, hopefully the trade talks surrounding him begin to subside. It’s sad that the Mets are in such a financial bind that they can’t find the money to lock up a Cy Young award winner to a contract extension. Sure, the arguments for trading him make sense. His value is at an all time high, and the Mets could maybe...

R.A. Dickey and David Price win Cy Young Awards

The 2012 Cy Young Awards were announced Wednesday night with Mets’ starter R.A. Dickey and Rays ace David Price taking home the NL and AL honors respectively. The 38-year-old Dickey led the National League in innings pitched (233 2/3) and strikeouts (230) while finishing the season with a 2.73 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. He also becomes the first knuckleball pitcher to win the award. Dickey...

R.A. Dickey Caps Off A Great Season and Great Day for the Mets

It has been easy to become a dyspeptic Mets fan the last few years. Injuries. Insipid performances from ownership promising change and not delivering. Some times, the talk of playing competitive ball, or just being a positive fan base sounds like prattle. The Jason Bay contract several years ago is now seen as a document that reeks of meretriciousness. Sometimes following this baseball...

Why Price got my vote for Cy Young

Yes, I voted for David Price over Justin Verlander for American League Cy Young. And yes, I am happy to defend that selection, and would defend it publicly even if the Baseball Writers' Association of America were not revealing all of our ballots for the first time. The new transparency is a fantastic development, requiring every voter to be accountable. You'll still see...

Cy Young surprise

Sure, OK, David Price wins the American League Cy Young Award. Not entirely surprising.   But R.A. Dickey in the National League? Don’t get me wrong, he put up some great numbers and was absolutely deserving of the honor. But raise your hand if you had Dickey winning the award before the season started.   [...]

Today COULD be an incredible PR day for the Mets if they want it to be

If the Mets played their cards the right way, imagine how good they could look today in the eyes of the fans and the media. Here’s what I mean: The Marlins are awful. They’re the laughingstock of the NL East and not the Mets. They will finish in last place next season. I have no doubt about that at all. Trading away their entire team yesterday just makes the Mets look that much...

Rays’ David Price wins A.L. Cy Young Award

Wednesday night, Price was voted unanimously by voters to become the 2012 Cy Young Award winner.  The award is given out to the best pitch in the National and American Leagues and voted on by the Baseball Writers Association of America. Tampa Bay’s David Price named winner of the 2012 American League Cy Young Award

By the slimmest of margins, David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays was named the 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner over the Detroit Tigers’ Justin Verlander, with Jered Weaver of the LA Angels of Anaheim finishing a distant third. It was the closest finish since 1969, when another Tiger pitcher, Denny McLain, tied for the honors with Baltimore’s Mike Cuellar. Most people had in fact considered...

Rosenthal: Mets negotiations with Wright more advanced than with Dickey

While the Miami Marlins are in the headlines for dismantling the core of their team, the New York Mets are apparently making an effort to retain theirs.  Tonight Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports said that the team submitted a proposal to Wright and the third basemen’s reps made a counter-offer. #bbpBox_268557552298639360 a { text-decoration:none; color:#0084B4; }#bbpBox_268557552298639360...

Rays' Price edges Tigers' Verlander for AL Cy Young Award

Tampa Bay Rays' star lefthander David Price won the American League Cy Young Award on Wednesday, narrowly edging out runner-up and last year's Cy Young winner, Detroit's Justin Verlander, by a razor-thin margin of just four points. Verlander received 14 of 28 first place votes, while Verlander received 13 first place votes. It was one of the closest vote totals ever...

On the Function and Direction of Post-Season Awards

On Wednesday, David Price was named the winner of the 2012 American League Cy Young Award, to some degree of disagreement. R.A. Dickey was named the winner of the 2012 National League Cy Young Award, to some lesser degree of disagreement. On Thursday, Buster Posey will presumably be named the winner of the 2012 NL Most Valuable Player Award, and Miguel Cabrera will presumably be...
