Apparently this All-Star break is not turning into much of a break at all for the New York Mets.  After the controversy of R.A. Dickey being slighted out of starting tonight’s game had somewhat settled, the team is now reporting that Dillon Gee will be placed on the disabled list after it was found that a blood clot in his right shoulder was causing numbness in his fingers.

This is news which will actually effect the games that matter and is big blow to New York as the team has relied heavily on the strength of its starting pitchers.  According to the Mets official press release:

On Sunday, Dillon Gee complained of numbness in the fingers of his right hand. Yesterday, after extensive testing, Dillon was found to have a clot in an artery in his right shoulder and doctors at New York- Presbyterian Hospital in New York City used a catheter to break up the clot. Dillon will remain hospitalized for the next day or two to ensure that the clot is fully resolved.

Dillon will not make his next start and will be placed on the Disabled List.  The timing of his return to baseball activity is currently undetermined.”

Questions now need to be answered regarding how serious this injury is, how long Gee will miss, and who will replace him in the rotation.  Information will need to come out in that order before we know what this means for the 26-year-old righty and the team going forward.

On Saturday afternoon Gee tossed a career high-tying eight innings, allowing one run and seven hits without issuing a walk en route to his sixth victory of the season.  Over his last four starts Gee had posted a 3.07 ERA s to lower his season earned run average to a respectable 4.10.

If the Mets only need a spot starter then there are several internal options on the 40-man roster to choose from:

If Gee is out just the two weeks (possible), then they need to fill the 5th spot once between now and then. Make a 40-man move? Harvey? eg. 26 minutes ago via EchofonReplyRetweetFavorite @michaelgbaron Michael Baron

For now we can only speculate what the team will do but in looking at the big picture fans should just hope the injury isn’t serious and can be easily resolved.
