Carlos Ruiz plates 7 but Phillies lose in extra innings. Phillies vs. Braves 5/2/12 QUICK HITS:

Atlanta defeats Philadelphia 15-3 in 11 innings. Series tied 1-1.

  • Earlier we broke down how bad the Phillies offense was struggling. That certainly wasn't the case tonight.
  • Carlos Ruiz had the game of his career. He finished the game 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 7 RBI's. Chooch has been one of the Phils' most consistent batters so far this year, and he really brought it upon himself to keep his team in the game.
  • Not only did he account for over half of his team's total runs, but he almost singlehandedly bailed out his main man Roy on the mound.
  • While Chooch had a day to remember, Doc Halladay had an outing he'd like to forget. He'll probably let his performance on Wednesday night fester for a little though, that's how uncharacteristic it was for him.
  • After blowing a 6 run lead, here is Halladay's final line: 5.1 innings pitched, 12 hits, 8 runs, 5 K, and 1 HR allowed.
  • Those numbers weren't just uncharacteristic for Halladay, they broke some pretty impressive streaks.

Todd Zolecki puts it into perspective for us:

Halladay had not allowed a home run since Sept. 19, 2011, a stretch of 50 consecutive innings. He had not allowed a grand slam since July 9, 2008, when Evan Longoria hit one. He had not allowed six runs in one inning since May 10, 2007, when the Red Sox got him.

It was just the second time in his career Halladay allowed 12 or more hits and eight or more earned runs in a game.

Those are some pretty crazy numbers. And I guarantee Doc has probably been working out through the night to get himself prepared for his next start.

The game was actually tied 13-13 heading into the bottom of the 11th, when who else but Chipper Jones launces a walk-off home run (pictured above) to add to his impressive career resume.

The Phillies and Braves will get right back at it Thursday for a 12:10pm afternoon start.
