Found August 14, 2012 on Raise the Jolly Roger!:
The Dodgers inched closer to the Pirates in the NL Wild Card race on Monday night with a 5-4 victory at PNC Park. Jeff Karstens was able to go seven innings, but the Dodgers got enough good swings off him to get the job done. Jeff allowed seven hits–four of them for extra bases–and one poorly timed walk. He turned in the longest outing in a week by a Bucs starter, but LA was able to come up with some big hits against him. Shane Victorino delivered two of the big blows: an RBI double and a 2-run homer. I could go on a rant about those whining about how the Bucs didn’t trade for Victorino, but I won’t do that just yet. I’ll just point out that Travis Snider has been more productive than him since both were traded…so save those complaints until that changes (which I hope it doesn’t). The Bucs were able to stay in the game on offense, mostly thanks to a huge night from Garrett Jones. He went 4-for-4 with two big doubles (3 RBI’s)…and also made a great catch against the wall in RF that s...

Dodgers promote Yasiel Puig to Rancho Cucamonga?

The Dodgers just might have promoted Yasiel Puig to Rancho Cucamonga. Here's a tweet from sp11ke (former minor-leaguer): "#Dodgers Yasiel Puig is in the stands here at Rancho Cucamonga. I guess his 1.500 OPS in 9 AZL games was enough." It makes sense. The Dodgers wouldn't just randomly have Puig attend a game in Rancho from Arizona, so it's a safe assumption...

Dodgers place Hairston on DL, recall Herrera

Utilityman Jerry Hairston Jr. was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Dodgers with left hip inflammation. The move is retroactive to Aug. 12. Hairston is batting .273 with four home runs and 26 RBIs this season. Infielder/outfielder Elian Herrera was recalled from Class AAA Albuquerque, where he was hitting .299 with one home run and 19 RBI in 24 games since being sent...

Victorino powers Dodgers past Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Shane Victorino hit his 10th homer of the season and drove in three runs to lift the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night. Matt Kemp added two hits for the Dodgers, who moved within 1 games of the Pirates for one of the two National League wild card spots. Aaron Harang (8-7) pitched six effective innings to snap a modest...

Pirates Notebook: Karstens Tinkering with Curve; McDonald Gets Bumped in Rotation

Jeff Karstens – Image Credit: Pittsburgh Pirates Jeff Karstens has been working on some adjustments over his last several starts. Since returning from the disabled list due  to a shoulder injury, which caused him to miss over two months, Karstens has posted a 3.79 ERA after his four earned run outing on Monday against Los Angeles. “I don’t think I’ve pitched terribly, but...

This Date in Pirates History: August 15

On a busy day for Pittsburgh Pirates history, we have two transactions that include Hall of Fame players and two pitchers that threw just one inning in their Pirates career. In his Jolly Roger Rewind, John Fredland goes back to 1951 to recap a first for an all-time Pirate great. The Transactions On this date in 1969, the Pirates traded Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Bunning to the Los...

The best of #FakePiratesAuction

During last night’s game, the Pirates and ROOT Sports hosted a charity auction that was wildly successful. By auctioning off some very neat Pirates-related prizes/experiences and some VIP bags, they raised over half a million dollars for Pirates Charities, which is incredible. The proceeds will benefit the Pirates’ “Wins for Kids” program and the Children’s Institute of...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Los Angeles Dodgers – Game 117

Positive Recap From Mellie. You will get not get a positive outlook from me. I know most people disagree with my assessment, even on this blog, but this probably started at the All Star Break, and the Pirates have failed to clear hurdles, and in some cases Hurdle’s. ASB was one.  They couldn’t carry the [...]

Pirates News And Notes

Just some news and notes before the Bucs take on the Dodgers this week.   It was announced that James McDonald will be moved back to Friday, and AJ Burnett will pitch on Thursday, for the getaway game against the Dodgers.  This will give James another day to rest, and hopefully fix what is going wrong. It’s important that the Pirates get him right before the end of the season...

Indianapolis Indians Player Notes 8/14/12: Kyle McPherson and Bryan Morris

The West Division-leading Indianapolis Indians dropped a 4-2 decision to the Rochester Red Wings Tuesday evening at Rochester’s Frontier Field. In this game, right-hander Kyle McPherson made his second Triple-A start for the Indians. It was McPherson’s 11th start of the season. He missed the first two months of the season with shoulder right-shoulder inflammation. Indianapolis...

Barmes Grand Slam Could be Turning Point

It was the third inning and the Pirates looked to be in a very familiar position that had plagued the last 19 seasons. They were losing -getting crushed- by a team that was out of the playoff hunt for three months now.  The Padres, winners of ten straight at PNC Park, took a quick 1-0 lead on the second pitch of the game thanks to a Chris Denorfia solo homer. The Padres plated three...

Game 114: Pirates 11 Padres 5

"One swing."That's what I told myself when the Padres took their 4-0 lead in the first inning today.  As I wrote earlier today, the Pirates are playing badly. I'm trying to take the long view of the season here, but they're not making it super-easy. A sweep to the Padres with Ross Ohlendorf on the mound? That'd be tough to stomach, wild card lead or no...
