The Dodgers are zeroing in on Ricky Nolasco, according to multiple sources. However a deal isn’t close at this time, tweets Jim Bowden of ESPN and MLB Network Radio. The Marlins are still feeling out all of their options with as many as six teams in the hunt. This morning Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle said the Dodgers are “on blitzkrieg” to acquire Nolasco. The matchup makes perfect sense to me. The Dodgers can easily absorb the remaining $6MM on Nolasco’s contract, and with the Giants, Rockies, and Padres being rumored suitors, it would block our rivals from landing the pitching stud. Nolasco has a 3.68 ERA with 6.9 K/9, 2.2 BB/9, and a 41.6 percent ground-ball rate in 100 1/3 innings this year. He’s only 30-years-old, and will be a free agent this winter. Renting Nolasco is not the worse thing in the world, despite not getting compensatory draft picks for him. Nolasco would be an instant upgrade to the middle-end of the rotation and wouldn’t cost much to acquire if we take on all of his salary. The bigger question is, are the rumors of a Giancarlo Stanton/Ricky Nolasco package true? My guess is yes. I’m sure the Dodgers are exploring the option, but the price is going to be far too steep in my opinion to see a deal get done. Plus, I don’t see Miami taking a big contract like Crawford or Ethier, so let’s just take Nolasco and move on.
