Jon Heyman reports in this afternoon that the San Diego Padres have been receiving calls on third baseman Chase Headley. It's been widely speculated that the Padres would be willing to deal their prized third baseman, and it now seems as though the Dodgers must absolutely do their due diligence in seeking a trade for Headley.

Heyman notes that it will "a lot" to acquire the young slugger, but that should come as no surprise. Headley is only 28 years old and is already putting together another respectable season. Headley is hitting 269/.373/.415 with seven homers and eight steals this season. More importantly Headley has put up some monster numbers inside Dodger Stadium. Headley's career numbers are certainly worth taking a closer look at.

Pretty impressive right? That's certainly an upgrade over Juan Uribe and Jame Loney. So the question is if the price is already at a lot, does the price go up even more because of the cardinal rule? You know the one where you have to up the ante a bit for inter-divisional trades? Probably. The price is high not only because he's an incredible baseball player, but he's also earning only $3.475MM this season, his second in his arbitration eligible years. He's also a Super Two, meaning, he's still got two more years of team control remaining before being eligible for free agency, and that won't happen until after the 2014 season.

So why would the Padres trade him? Allow me. The Friars are no where close to competing in the division, sad but true. Okay, really it's not sad at all, but that is because I bleed blue. No really, I do. Two years away from competing? Maybe. But the Padres would all but probably lose him in free agency anyway. So the mindset right now is, trade him at peak value, get the biggest haul in return, reap the rewards later when they are better in line to compete. Plain and simple.

If the Padres are looking to the future, perhaps some quality pitching would do the trick? It's almost a certainty that the Padres are looking for pitching, maybe throw in Alex Castellanos with a few pitching prospects, even then I'm not sure if that would be enough. It won't quite be the haul they got for Adrian Gonzalez, but I'm sure it will be pretty close.

Headley, great offensive numbers, especially inside Dodger Stadium. Well respected player both on and off the field, above average defense at the hot corner, and did I mention he's only 28, younger Colletti, think younger. FanGraphs ranks him as 2012's 13th most valuable position player in baseball, with 3.0 wins above replacement. Even at an inflated price it would be hard to argue what you are getting in return. I'm thinking there isn't a price I wouldn't pay for Headley, as long as it doesn't include the obvious, Kershaw, Kemp, Ethier, but it's not like the Padres could afford them any way. Play GM for a day in the comment section below, I'd love to chat this one out.
