As we enter the third week of spring training, Kyle Lohse remains unsigned, a combination of salary demands and draft pick compensation scaring off many would-be suitors. Now, there may be an spot for Lohse to land. Texas Rangers prospect Martin Perez was hit by a line drive while pitching Sunday, fracturing his forearm. Like the Yankees' Curtis Granderson, who broke his forearm when he was hit with a pitch, Perez is expected to miss at least the first month of the regular season. Perez was expected to fill the 5th spot in the Rangers' rotation, a group that's already been hit hard with injuries over the past year. Colby Lewis tore his flexor tendon last July, and Neftali Feliz went under the knife for Tommy John surgery soon after. Lewis is expected back by early June; Feliz probably won't be back until late in the season. With Perez out, the Rangers will now likely turn to Robbie Ross, Justin Grimm, or the likes of Kyle McClellan and Randy Wells to fill th...

Jon Daniels hopes Nolan Ryan doesn't leave Rangers

Texas Rangers' Jon Daniels, who was promoted to president of baseball operations on Friday, said he hopes Hall of Famer and CEO Nolan Ryan remains with the club. Daniels had been the Rangers general manager since 2005,

Nolan Ryan could reportedly soon leave the Rangers

Nolan Ryan has become a symbol of the success that the Texas Rangers have enjoyed over the past several seasons. The former Cy Young Award winner is a celebrity in Arlington, and he has received much of the credit for the Rangers’ three straight playoff appearances and two division titles in the past three seasons. Now, there are rumors that Ryan’s days with the team may be numbered...

Harrison hopes offseason pays off in '13

The two veins that pop out on Matt Harrison's forehead when his blood pressure goes up haven't been that prevalent over the last year. Having a breakout season for the Texas Rangers and then getting rewarded with a new contract would make a lot of people rest easy. The success of the 2012 season allowed Harrison to keep his emotions in check. Most of the time. "I...

Sudden questions about Ryan's future with Rangers

Nolan Ryan is synonymous with the Texas Rangers. Yet, suddenly there seem to be some questions about Ryan's future with the team. Primarily, how has his role changed and is he going to stay? The Hall of Fame pitcher spent the last five seasons of his playing days in a Rangers uniform, getting his 300th victory, throwing the last two of his record seven no-hitters and getting...

Perez breaks arm when hit by liner

The Texas Rangers have lost the leading candidate to be their No. 5 starter for at least a month. Left-hander Martin Perez broke his left forearm Sunday when he was hit by a line drive in a 7-6 loss to the Seattle Mariners, and he will be out into April. Perez was struck on the arm just above the wrist by a liner off the bat of Brad Miller. The top prospect dropped to the ground...

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has ruptured disk

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has a ruptured disk in his back. Matheny, a major league catcher from 1994-06, is scheduled to have an epidural injection Monday to reduce inflammation and get a particle off a nerve. If the injection doesn't help alleviate pain, he said surgery would "have to be something we would consider." Starting his second season as the...

What Are the Options For the Cardinals at Shortstop?

With Rafael Furcal most likely starting the season on the DL, the Cardinals could be in the market for a shortstop. Sure, there are guys like Pete Kozma and Ronny Cedeno on the roster, but do either really instill confidence in the masses. I’ll pass. Here are a few other options. Craig Amsinger brought up an interesting name on St. Louis radio today – Brendan Ryan. With...

Furcal to gets second opinion on elbow

St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal is getting a second opinion on his ailing elbow. General manager John Mozeliak said Furcal would be examined Wednesday by Dr. James Andrews. The 35-year-old Furcal is out indefinitely after reinjuring the elbow he hurt late last season. Furcal and the team elected to try rehab rather than reconstructive surgery in the offseason. The...

Rick Porcello Trade Talks

According to ESPN (my Scorecenter App alert, to be precise) – the Rangers have inquired about Rick Porcello. This makes sense to me for a number of reasons. 1) The Rangers just lost Martin Perez for several months with a fractured forearm. Perez was slated to be their #5. This is a team who has already shelved Neftali Feliz and Colby Lewis to begin the season. 2) As we’ve discussed...

Catching Up After 1 Week

Spring Training.  The Cardinals, like most teams now have a full week of games under their belts that you may or may not be paying attention to. If you like basketball or hockey, you're probably a bit out of the loop of what happened last week. So let's get caught up together. Biggest surprise?  Shane Robinson. He's batting .556 with 2 HR and 7 RBIs...

Rafael Furcal's elbow is not all better

St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal was supposed to make his 2013 Spring Training debut in the field over the weekend. Now he may not be playing at all in 2013.  The veteran 35-year-old shortstop suffered a set back in the rehab of his partially torn ligament in his throwing arm and the news is obviously not good [via Fox Sports Midwest]:  "He's just not...

Furcal’s elbow shuts him down; next steps TBD

St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal will be out indefinitely with continued elbow pain.

Twins 7, Cardinals 0

Lance Lynn allowed four hits in a three-run first inning and Jason Motte gave up a two-run homer in his second straight outing as the St. Louis Cardinals lost to the Minnesota Twins 7-0 Monday. Working on his slider instead of throwing fastballs and trying to induce fly balls into the wind, Lynn gave up three runs - two earned - and five hits in 2 1-3 innings. Aaron Hicks and Brian...
